To Do No More Harm: Violence Sensitization

The Objective
In the autumn of 2000, the first Violence Sensitization Workshop Series ran at McMaster University Health Sciences Center (MUMC). Through live interactive theatre, survivor testimony, and conceptualization tasks, the objective of the workshops was to let victims and survivors of abuse and violent crime come into the university and talk to the academics about where their needs were or were not being met by the three primary care systems that exist to help them.

The three primary care systems are as follows:

  • The medical system
  • The social service system
  • The legal system

WORKSHOP STILLS

Workshop # 5 was presented by Dr. David Wright, MD, and Gillian Templeton, OT, from Homewood Health Centre for Posttraumatic Stress Recovery. Moving into a clinical realm in long-term care and treatment of victims and survivors, participants were able to cognize dissociation and gain strength in the areas of screening, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, handling flash-backs, communication, avoiding misdiagnosis and other critical elements related to the long-term care and healing of trauma survivors.
