*FACE OF THE SUN*
Seen with the naked eye , the sun is a yellow ball , occasionally blemished with darker spots . The sun's spots are created by intense magnetic forces that push up streams of gas from deep within the core . They appear darker because they are cooler . This photograph of sun's spot was taken in July 1985 . Its colorful appearance is due to computer enhancement , which reveals subtle variations in temperature that are not understood by Astronomers as yet . This sun's spot has a diameter of 10,000 miles , although spots as wide as 100,000 miles have been observed from earth .
