***A  COMET***

  Braving  a  fierce  dust  storm  which  threatened  to  tear  it  apart , the  space - probe  GIOTTO  passed  within  a  few  hundred  miles  of  Halley's  Comet  and  photographed  the  nucleus  itself . The  nucleus  is  composed  of  ice , rocks  and  stones , and  an  unknown  heat - resistant  organic  compound . Most  of  the  surfaces  covered  with  a  thick  dark  crust  of  unknown  composition . The  whole  comet  has  been  referred  to  as  a  'Dirty Snow Ball' . The  comet  came  within 94 million  miles (150 million km )  of  the  Earth  on  March  15 , 1986 ( inset ) . It  was  most  clearly  visible  in  Australia , where  this  photograph  was  taken .
