Kids and Camping:
This is a subject that seems to be plaguing people. I would not have even thought to write about the subject, but people want to know.

Kids are kids no matter where they are. For the most, they will act the same out camping as they do at home. You may notice a slight change in how they act and how you see your (the) kids. I hope that it will be a positive change.
This change comes because of their new surrounding and learning experiences. Opening new adventures and challenges their imaginations. Your interactions with each other will change (I hope) too. No longer are your lives separated by work, school, video games or television. This gives you the opportunity to learn from each other, about each other and become closer. That is, if the interest for this is there.

Our kids love to go camping and we never think of not taking them. They do not seem to have a problem keeping busy. Kids have a way of finding their own entertainment. Of course, taking along games and other outdoor toys (balls, badminton, volleyball, football, baseball....) and outdoor projects is also a good idea. We always include the kids in all activities and outings we do while camping.

One way to keep kids interested is to involve them. Do not push them away. Answer any questions they might have. Talk to them and help them understand any fears they might have about camping. This helps them to be more in tuned to what is going on around them, thus making their experience a more pleasurable one. Kids are naturally curious that is why you get so many questions asked of you. That is not to say that boredom cannot play a roll in it too! Example: "Are we there yet?"

Some of the things we do with our kids around the campsite: We play board games, badminton, cards, and roast marshmallow and make smores, just to name a few. If you enjoy your kids, they can make the experience more enjoyable for you.

Keeping track of kids while out and about can be trying. When our two older kids were younger, we did not allow them to wander out of our line of sight. They now are allowed to roam a little more freely. Although, we still feel the need to know their whereabouts at any give time.
So a few years ago we purchased two of those Motorola TalkAbouts (fairly expensive) and four (less expensive, but still good) Curtus brand two way radios. They have a 2 mile range, more or less.
The new rule for our kids: If you are out of radio range you are too far!
