French actress known internationally as a star of 1960s European art cinema, with especially, Jacques Demy's Lola (1961), Federico Fellini's La dolce vita (1960) and 8½ (1963) and André Delvaux's Un soir, un train (1968), though she had been acting in French films since 1946. In particular, she appeared in André Cayatte's Les Amants de Vérone (1949), Alexandre Astruc's Le Rideau cramoisi (1953) and Jacques Becker's Montparnasse 19 / Modigliani of Montparnasse (1958), with Gérard Philipe. These films established her as an ethereal, sensitive and fragile beauty with a tendency for tragic destinies or restrained suffering. This persona was popularized by the enormous success of Claude Lelouch's Un homme et une femme / A Man and a Woman (1966), co-starring Jean-Louis Trintignant. Lelouch tried to revive the Aimée-Trintignant couple (not so successfully this time) in Un homme et une femme 20 ans après / A Man and a Woman: 20 Years later (1986). With a few exceptions, Aimée has remained the star of art films rather than popular ones, her career ranging from France and Italy to the U.S. She appears in Robert Altman's Prêt-à-porter (1994, US). — Ginette Vincendeau, The Companion to French Cinema
