Sathya's World Of
Music

Dear friend,
Welcome to this site dedicated to my musical idols. I am no active musician meaning that I do not practice any of the musical arts - no singing talents, no knowledge of the instruments. I am just a passive but ardent lover of music. And most of that love revolves around the music of the Old Indian films - to be more precise, the music from the films that were made during the pre-1965 years.

I am afraid I am not an open minded music listener - rather a prejudiced one. I love the music which has melody in it. I hate loudness in music. I dont know how people scream and bellow at the top of their voices and yet call it "music". Thats taste for you ! But anyway, I want melody - lots of it - in the music. And the old Indian film music were so memorable because of this important factor. There were a number of composers and they created a variety of music - but they were all rooted in melody. Sweetness and serenity flowed through most of the music that was created. I am so thankful that God has blessed me with a taste to appreciate such music.

I never tire of telling people how I actually got into being potty about music from films which were made some three decades before my birth. My youth passed in the busy, bubbling city of Delhi. I was then a very normal Delhi kid, a great fan of Amitabh Bachan and not knowing annything about film history or music. What Amitabh Bachan sang on screen was what was my music. Then in 1985 when I was 10, my father was transferred to Dubai and we joined him there. The very healthy sub-continent population exists there and while Amitabh Bachan ruled, old films were almost equally popular. There was a multitude of people who adored Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor... and the music of course was all-popular.
My father was a big fan of Guru Dutt and on his repeated recommendations we saw "Pyaasa" a movie whcih changed my tastes forever. I enjoyed the highly intense drama no end and also the music. And swiftly, I was hooked on old films. Guru Dutt was of course my favorite. But I also enjoyed a number of other films as well. But the music I was interested in was mostly related to the films I saw. It was only in 1991 or therabouts that I got interested in listening to film songs solely because of their music. It was Mukesh's songs which started this and was established by Naushad's ""Baiju Bawra". From then on it has been a journey, a jolly beautiful search of rare old music. I have discovered the magic of Naushad, Anil Biswas, C.Ramchandra, Talat Mahmood, Suraiya.. a most beautiful journey it has been.

These men were true geniuses - I never cease to be amazed by their music. From where did Anlda get the genius to leave that oh..so infinitesimal a gap in the second stanza of "Seene me sulagte hain arman" just before "Chup hun to kaleja". Where did C.Ramchandra get the genius to use the vioin so brilliantly ion "Katate hain dukh me din" ?!! I do not imagine that I would ever get out of this paradise. This page is dedicated to all these legendary music men who have made my life such a more beautiful experience and worth living through...Thank you Sirs !!
