Sonu Nigam's talent has made him a National craze. He can modulate his voice according to the song situation such that it suits the person on whom the song is being picturised. He has sung for many actors and wants to sing for Aamir Khan as he thinks his voice will suit him well. He cuts across gender - men admire him and women adore him.
Sonu Nigam came to Bombay from Delhi to start his career in films at the age of 18. He has struggled a lot to make him known. He knocked several doors but was told that he is too young to become a playback singer. He had a hard luck then. Nowadays, young people are given chances in playback singing. Initially, the songs sung by him were re-recorded in the voice of some other singer. This made him hurt but he could do nothing as he was a fresher. So he swallowed everything. Late Mr. Gulshan Kumar gave him his first break in playback singing. The first song Sonu Nigam sang as a playback singer was 'Achcha sila diya' of the film 'Bewafa Sanam' which became very popular.
Sonu Nigam also sang cover versions of popular songs of Mohd. Rafi, Mukesh, Manna Dey. At this time he was accused of tarnishing the image of the original singer. Since past three years he has stopped singing cover versions. He admits that he loved singing the numbers by all these great singers since it was like a training ground for him. To understand how they enunciated a certain phrase, how they rendered a song with emotion - it helped him study their styles and learn more from
them.
Sonu Nigam got the award for the song 'Sandese aate hain' of 'Border'.
He is not a person who enjoys socialising with film folks. He does his work and comes home. He has his own friends and two lovely sisters who he adores. They spend time together at home, friends come over but he keeps away from partying. He does not understand and like that culture.
What strikes one is this young man's emphatic opinions and clear cut priorities. His work is important, but not at the expense of his dignity. He lives life by his own ways.
Today, Sonu has carved his own place in the industry. Most composers like him for his efficiency and professionalism. He is a favourite with Annu Malik and Sonu too, believes in Annu Malik's talent.
Sonu has worked with everybody, from Jatin-Lalit and A.R.Rahman to Sandeep Chowta. There was a time he was rushing about singing as many as 30 songs a day, trying to make a living. Today, Sonu sings about one song a day and owns four cars. If status symbols are any indication then Sonu Nigam has definitely arrived.
A good news for all Sonu Nigam fans, Sonu is nowadays busy reading the scripts of movies. Are you amazed! yes, Sonu Nigam is taking up acting along with playback singing. We should all wish him success in his new venture.
