At just 28 years old Alister McRae is proving to be the next rallying sensation from the McRae family. Expertly following in the footsteps of his father, five time British Champion Jimmy McRae and his brother, the 1995 World Rally Champion, Colin McRae. In a relatively short space of time, Alister has earned the position as one of the world's top young rally drivers.
Having won the British Rally Championship in 1992 in a Group N Ford Sierra, he then went onto win the series outright in 1995 driving a Formula 2 Nissan. It has not just been on home ground where his talents have shone. A number of overseas outings have seen him compete in Sweden, Thailand, Holland, and the Azores in a variety of machinery including Subaru Imprezas, Escort Cosworths and a Vauxhall Calibra. In 1997 Alister began a two-year spell with the Volkswagen Formula 2 team competing on a mixture of British and World Championship events. In total he scored six F2 victories, including three on the British Championship as well taking the overall F2 honours in Portugal, Finland and Australia. Alister finished the 1998 season with a drive in the works Subaru Impreza on the Great Britain Rally, partnering his brother. An amazing drive saw him running in second place, until an accident on the final day forced his retirement. Alister made his Hyundai debut on the all-tarmac Catalunya Rally in north-east Spain in April 1998. He followed this with an outing for the team on the Corsican Rally in early May. For the 1999 season Alister will partner Kenneth Eriksson on 10 events of the Formula 2 Championship as part of the Hyundai Motor Sport challenge for the FIA Formula 2 World Championship. Alister becomes the second McRae to drive for Hyundai. His father took an MSD prepared Hyundai Accent to second in class and 34th overall in the 1997 RAC Rally - Hyundai's first foray into rallying outside the Far East. |
