This small demonstration unit was built in response to the many questions we always receive at exhibitions and shows from people wanting to know the basics of "the electrics" on our layouts.
Everything is built on top of the base boards, so as well as the track, we have the wires, the point motors, point rodding, relays, controllers, and everything that makes a layout work, on show instead of being hidden. Even one of the controllers has been handmade in a clear perspex case. There is also a demonstration of automatic 3-light colour signalling.
Normally there are three locomotives available to be shunted over the points to demonstate "how to drive".

Here "our man in charge" explains some of the works to two interested visitors at our last exhibition.

We like to encourage youngsters to "have-a-go". Showing them the basics, we ask them to work out what points to change, buttons to press, knobs to twiddle in order to get an engine from one end to the other. Rather like the complexities of computers, they tend to pick this up very quickly!
The signal demonstration track can be seen in the foreground.

At another show, another member of the team explains the controls.
