A’dam

The a’dam is actually a ter’angreal, used to control a woman who can channel.  The common form of the a’dam is a silvery metal collar and bracelet, connecting the sul’dam and damane .  The sul’dam wears the bracelet, and the damane is collared around the neck.

The a’dam can only be used by a woman who at least has the potential to channel.  It has no affect upon those who do not have the ability to channel the One Power .  However,

it allows the sul’dam to inflict her wishes upon the damane who is wearing the collar.  In this manner a sul’dam can force a damane to channel how and when she wishes.

The first a’dam was made by an Aes Sedai, Deain, who brought it to Luthair Paendrag hoping to gain his favor.  She thought she had solved Luthair’s Aes Sedai problems.  Deain, too, was eventually collared, much to her dismay.

A typical a’dam cannot control a man who can channel.  A man and woman who can both channel, connected by an a’dam, both suffer an excruciating death.  There are rumors, though, of a black a’dam which can in fact control a man.  It requires the use of two sul’dam, and eventually they will be maddened by the taint on saidin as well.
