Children of the Light

The order known as the Children of the Light was founded by Lothair Mantelar during the War of the Hundred Years.  Over the course of the next hundred years they evolved from an order of peaceful preachers to a military organization dedicated to the defeat of the Dark One and the eradication of all Darkfriends.

The Fortress of the Light, the main stronghold of the Children, is located in Amadicia.  It is from the Fortress that the Lord

Captain Commander oversees the actions of the Children.  The Children scattered throughout the land tend to impose their views of life and truth on the citizens of whatever country they happen to be in.

The Children do not receive a great deal of respect in most places, primarily because of the way they go about their business.  But the Children are feared, and rightly so.  Children need little proof to name someone a Darkfriend.

If people fear the Children of the Light, they are terrified of the Hand of the Light.  Known as Questioners to outsiders, members of the Hand of the Light serves as interrogators of supposed Darkfriends.  They are not interested in determining guilt - in their minds, the prisoner is already guilty.  They are interested only in obtaining a confession of guilt, often using torture to obtain this confession.

The Questioners are commanded by the High Inquisitor, who holds almost as much power as the Lord Captain Commander himself.  Other Children resent the Questioners, as they tend to hold themselves as a power separate from the rest of the Children.

It is the Lord Captain Commander who is the true ruler of Amadicia.  While the Children deny it, they are the real power of this nation.  Amadicia retains its monarchy solely to free the Children of ceremonial duties.

Amadicia is the center of the Children’s power, but they have troops in nearly every city of every nation.  The Children of the Light, while generally not well thought of, are certainly a major player in world politics.
