Tel’aran’rhiod

Tel’aran’rhiod is the World of Dreams, the Unseen World.  Unlike the ordinary dreams of people, the World of Dreams is an actual place.  Wounds taken in Tel’aran’rhiod exist upon waking.  While people who die in their dreams wake up in the morning, those who die in the Unseen World never wake.

People able to enter the Unseen World at will are known as dreamwalkers, or Dreamers, and are rare.  The ability to enter Tel’aran’rhiod is unrelated to the Power, as many Aiel dreamwalkers are unable to channel.  There are ter’angreal, though, which enable even a nonchanneler to enter the World of Dreams.

Tel’aran’rhiod is a nonpermanent reflection of the waking world.  Permanent objects in the real world, such as mountains and roads, have corresponding reflections in Tel’aran’rhiod.  Actions taken in the World of Dreams do not affect things in the waking world, however.

Humans are not alone in Tel’aran’rhiod.  Wolves are particularly prominent, as dreamwalkers have reported frequently encountering wolves in their dreams.  Sometimes these wolves have even acted as guides.  It is a known fact that Wolfbrothers, those rare humans able to communicate with wolves, are also able to enter Tel’aran’rhiod at will.

Just like a normal dream, it is possible for a dreamwalker to affect Tel’aran’rhiod with their thoughts.  It is possible to create almost anything by imagining it, but it will disappear as soon as the Dreamer stops concentrating on their creation.

Tel’aran’rhiod is a very dangerous place for those who do not know where they are or what they are doing.  Much of what was known about the Unseen World has been lost since the Age of Legends.  Those currently utilizing the World of Dreams are only able to scrape the surface of what was once commonplace.
