WOW HOMEWORK DUE NOVEMBER 19
HEBREWS 5:14-6:8
NOTE: The attached page will be
the most important part of your homework this week. It consists of an addendum I wrote to a commentary used the first
time I taught Hebrews, some ten years ago. And you know what, I cannot improve
upon it! I am asking you to highlight, study, and thoroughly peruse this
attached sheet, and bring your questions to WOW with you!
Have a Blessed week!
- While
still fresh in your mind, write down one poignant or moving observation about
CHRIST OUR HIGH PRIEST from the last lecture…
- Read
5:14-6:8 carefully and slowly. Now
look at verses 4:14-16 initially.
These verses really represent a “definition of maturity.” Please write this out in
your own words…Write your own definition of maturity in faith! What
analogy is given here that is helpful in describing growth?
- Continuing
on this theme, list any signs of underdevelopment you find listed
regarding the recipients of this letter (there are several—look
carefully!) to what do you think
the term “solid food” refers? Does
vs. 14 suggest that believers should feed themselves or depend upon others
to feed them? What difference does this make? From 6:1, what phrase suggests how to “go on?” How do “leave” and “go” suggest
different actions? Can you think
of any application of this in your life right now?
- The
author lists in verses 1-2 of chapter 6 the “building blocks” of our
faith, items which he is saying we should MOVE PAST into maturity…what are
these basic “blocks?”
- For
verses 6:4-6—which are the most pivotal verses in the chapter (and some
would argue, in the book!) I direct your attention to the enclosed
addendum. Please read and study it carefully.
- Finally,
what is the author saying in verses 9-12?
What are some of the attributes the Hebrew audience had shown that
made the author confident they were truly saved??? Be specific! What does verse 12 mean to you
personally?
