HEBREWS HOMEWORK FOR WOW
Week 2
Due for October 1

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:  write out at least three “main thoughts” from the last lecture, and how they spoke to you personally—what are your “application points” from these main thrusts of the lecture? Be sure and record any  praises you have for ways God is bringing Hebrews actively to mind during your week…..

Hebrews 1: 5- 2: 3

  1. The author begins with a quote from Psalm 2.  Read Acts 4:23-26. From this passage, describe how the early church regarded the Old Testament…….now read Acts 13:32-37.. what facts appear that are not present in Heb 1:5-7?

What significance lies in the agreement of Psalm 2, the Acts and Hebrews passages?

  1. Re: the role of angels, look up I Peter 1:10-12……what amazing statement is recorded there about our relationship with angels?  What is the central point the author of Hebrews is making in 1:5-11? State it in your own words….Can you codify exactly what we have as a privilege that angels do not share? How is this true?
  2. List the characteristics of Christ and His reign that you find in vs. 9-12 of this first chapter (thorough, please). Verses 10-12 make a comparison.  Write out how you would explain this comparison to a child, or someone unfamiliar with Scripture.. (the original quote is in Ps 102:12, 25-28..)
  3. Heb 1: 13-14.. Re-read the question found in 1:5 along with vs. 13..what is the answer the author seeks?  Why do you think he asks this question? (hint: what is the “surpassing THEME of the entire book, again?”
  4. Chapter 1 does not discredit angels, but it DOES EXALT the Son….On  the basis of this, what significant truth is implied in 2:1-2?

  1. Write out how the truth of chapter 2, verse 1 could be applied throughout your study of Hebrews…Look at verses 1-3 carefully; read them again. Now write them out  in your own words—does this seem a “sinister” warning to you?

What meaning do you draw from the author’s inclusion of himself in the warning

and exhortation of these verses? Why/why not?

7.   In verse 4 when the author says, “God validated the message by signs, wonders,

and various miracles…” what comes to mind? What acts/events of the early church

    is he referring to?

8.  Record from the following verses various aspects of this “salvation” we are warned not to ignore:

      Hebrews 2:3, Romans 5:20-21, Hebrews 5:9, Colossians 1:19-20

      * With the aid of a good Bible concordance, list at least two more verses of Scripture that further describe salvation and comment on why they are significant to you.
