WOW HOMEWORK : HEBREWS 2:14-3:6

DUE WED OCT 15

  1. While you are still thinking of it, write out one response to the lecture—your “one necessary thing” from the “smorgasbord” that we uncover every week! Was it the warning not to “slip past” the harbor of salvation? Was it the incredible teaching that “it was fitting” that Christ should suffer for us? Record your new insight(s).

  1. Read 2:14-3:6 a couple of times, prayerfully. Now, from vs 15, how does it affect you personally that Christ has “freed us from the power of death?” See I Cor. 15:54-56.

  1. In Webster’s or other dictionary, write out meaning of “merciful” and “faithful,” as related to the High Priest role.. Now look up Leviticus 16:3-5, 15-22, 34, and give a brief description of the:

                  * duty of the High Priest

*meaning of atonement (another good one to check in dictionary)

What insights do you gather from this description of Christ as our High Priest? Jot down at least 3 comparisons.

  1. Since Jesus had successfully withstood temptation to sin (Matt 4:1-11), and had therefore not suffered the consequences of wrong choices, how do we understand the phrase, “He himself suffered when tempted?” (2:18) What does 2:18 mean to you? Do you think it is possible, in resisting, that Jesus actually encountered MORE temptation than we have? How so?

  1. From 3:1-6, write down briefly everything you know about Moses… Who was he to the Jewish believer? Why did he loom “so large?” (extra time? his life story is in Exodus 2-4, continuing throughout the book, but especially check out 6-7, 12, 16-17, 20…)

So from this passage, in what ways is Jesus said to be greater than Moses? Why is

the statement in 3:5-6 so amazing to the Jew reading it?

  1. The author of Hebrews uses “house” SIX times in these first verses of Chap 3.  That surely means it’s important! What do you think he means that we are God’s “house?” For similar analogies, look up Eph 4:15-16 and I Peter 2:4-8.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK, and SEE YOU WEDNESDAY!
