WOW HOMEWORK : HEBREWS 3: 7-19

DUE WED OCT 29

  1. Read the passage thoroughly.  It could be titled “The Peril of Unbelief.”  Look at verses 7-11.  What time period in Israel’s history do you imagine this might refer to?  What do you see as the significance of the author’s saying, “So, as the Holy Spirit says?”  (This is a heavy thought question!)  In ten words or less, what is the message of verses 7-11?

  1. From Psalm 78: 37-43, Amos 5: 23-27, and Acts 7:39-43, what picture emerges of the Israelites during the Exodus period?

  1. Moses recorded the history of the Exodus; the Psalmist used it to exhort the people of his day.  Later, the author of Hebrews used the Psalmist’s words to exhort the people of his day.  What is the danger that faced the peoples of all these times?  How is that danger present today?

  1. See verse 10.  Explain these phrases, and how they apply today:

-         “their hearts are always going astray.”

-         “they have not known my ways”

  1. In your opinion, is there any difference between the anger of men and the anger of God?  What would it be?

  1. Notice that the two verses Hebrews 3:6 and 14 frame the Old Testament quote of Psalm 95: 7-11.  Compare the two verses:

a.       how do they differ?

b.      how do they agree?

Why do you think the author repeats the Psalmist words (vv. 7-8, 15)?

  1. See verses 3: 12-14.  Now look up any or all of the following verses:  II Peter 1:3-9,    I Peter 1:3-7, 4: 10-11, Hebrews 10: 26-27 and 35-39 and then compare them to Hebrews 3:12.  List things a believer can do to guard against “turning away from the living God.”

  1. Four questions make up verses 16-17.  Re-read the question found in Hebrews 2: 2-4.  What relationship can be established between it and the questions in our present text

a.       concerning the Israelites?

b.      concerning the Hebrews readers?

  1. See Hebrews 3: 18-19.  What is the cause of God’s withdrawing the benefit of rest from an entire generation of Israelites?
