MISC THOUGHTS RE: $/Covetousness
“Thou shalt not covet…” Exodus 20
** #1 “On the getting of it…”
**#2
“On the keeping of it…” Luke 12
**#3
“On ‘Collections’”
**#4
Idolatry
“if
I have made gold my trust, or called fine gold my confidence; if I have
rejoiced b/c my wealth was great, or b/c my hand had gotten much;….this also
would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges, for I should have been false
to God above…”
Job 31:24,25,28
** we develop “formulas” for how God
blesses/withholds (note to self: read JOB again!)
**Coveting leads to other sins
In
the rich—to pride, indulgence
In
the poor—to envy, greed, avarice
**Our society ties $ to power, and the
resulting dynamic can cause the rich man/woman to be faulty in their
self-image…it “insulates” you from an “accurate self view according to God’s
thinking” (Rom 12:3)….further it can dull your NEED of GOD (“I came to call those who are sick, who
know their need…not the righteous, but sinners to repentance” Mk 2:17)
** The TITHE Is the MINIMUM…….a better
question is: “how much can I give to God’s work and still have what I need for
my family?”
**Jesus came to earth POOR, and aligned Himself with the poor, and
called us to care for and minister to the POOR… (Piper quote…)
