Caroline! Caroline!
GENDER ROLE OF MEN
GENDER ROLE OF WOMEN
All the guys would say she's mighty fine
But mighty fine only got you somewhere half the time...
...Real guys go for real down to Mars girls, yeah!
...See that roses really smell like poo-oo-ooo
Yeah, roses really smell like poo-oo-ooo
Outkast's music video for the song, "Roses" negatively portrays both male and female gender roles but also has a positive message. The video is about a girl named Caroline that is only liked for her looks. However, the video and the lyrics of the song are saying that looks are not everything. "Real guys go for real down to Mars (Earth) girls."
COGNITIVE THEORY -- At the beginning of the video, Caroline rejects Big Boi when he asks her to be his valentine. Big Boi is portrayed in the video as the all-around-guy who is good at everything at school. Yet Caroline doesn't like him, because he is not cute enough. The video brings about cognitive thoery because it motivates Big Boi intrinsically and extrinsically to get Caroline.
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION -- The fulfillment Big Boi will get from getting Caroline is more popularity. However, the fact that he is not cute enough for Caroline motivates him to try harder to hook up with her.
EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION -- Having Caroline as his girlfriend is the ultimate extrinsic motivation, because if Big Boi succeeds in hooking up with Caroline, he has just hooked himself up with the "hottest" girl in school.
UNDERACHIEVEMENT -- Men are motivated in this video to concentrate more on looks and less on school. The video seems to portray that what matters to Caroline is not Big Boi's achievements but his looks instead.
INTRINSIC THEORY -- Although the video is about Caroline who is the best looking girl in school, the message that Outkast is trying to relay is the fact that looks aren't everything and guys really look for real down-to-earth girls. The idea that guys look for girls who are themselves motivates women to be more natural and comfortable with their own selves.
MASLOW'S HEIRARCHY OF NEEDS -- The music video relates to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, because it gives hope to women who think that love and belonging needs are met only by looking like a super model.
ACHIEVEMENT NEED -- Women are also motivated to make achievements on their own because it is one of the factors that men find attractive as portrayed in the video.
