SNOOP DOGG - BEAUTIFUL

Beautiful, I just want you to know that you're my favorite girl.

Snoop Dogg's video, "Beautiful", sends out the message that women are supposed to be skinny to be beautiful. All girls in the video and pretty and skinny. Snoop and Pharrell are also pictured with many girls, displaying the fact that it's okay for men to go around with different girls, but only beautiful ones. Also, in the beginning, Snoop is being lazy and a woman is fixing his hair like a slave.

This definitely influences how society thinks. Since young children watch these videos on a daily basis, they idolize these rappers. They then begin to instill in their minds that only skinny is beautiful, and being masculine is "being a pimp". Girls also aim for weight loss, because they think being attractive will get them far.

  • INCENTIVE THEORY: Men and women's behaviors such as wanting to be skinny or wanting to be a pimp is part of the incentive theory. They believe they will receive rewards such as love and attention.
  • COGNITIVE THEORY: Intrinsic motivation--> People think these behaviors will lead to feeling good about themselves.
  • MASLOW'S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS: This video basically tells women that in order for them to gain approval from society (level 4 of the hierarchy), they have to have love and belonging needs (level 3). In order to obtain love and belong needs, they have to be skinny to be beautiful.
  • PSYCHOLOGICAL SEX FACTORS: Snoop makes it acceptable for boys to go from woman to woman.
