July 2001 Newsletter

Illinois
Red Hawk Riders

A Chapter of Women On Wheels®

This Month's Meeting

July 21, 2001
Many regularly attending members as well as a few of the newer attendees were probably present at last months meeting. However, since I was unable to attend (I was sick), I have little idea exactly who was there or what went on except that Maureen and Lynn were scheduled to organize the after-meeting ride. So if you're interested in hearing about that, mosey on down to the "Been There, Done That" section of this month's newsletter.

Upcoming Rides

After-Meeting-Ride
August 18
Immediately following our regularly scheduled monthly meeting, we plan to take a ride to Watson's Wild West in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. A hearty thanks goes out to Sue McDonald & Ron for organizing this one. Hope ya'll can make it--it really is quite an interesting place with lots of antique western paraphernalia. I understand lunch is also on the agenda so don't miss it--it should be lots of fun!

WOW 8th Annual Quad-State
Camp-out in Ontario, WI

August 3 - 5
The Quad-State Camp-out will be at the Stray Cat Cycle Campground on Highway 33, just outside of Wildcat Mountain State Park in Ontario, Wisconsin. Cost: $15.00 per person includes: 2 nights primitive camping, Saturday night cook-out, free coffee, great roads, scenery, friends, and fun.

Ontario is just 40 miles southeast of LaCrosse--a little over 200 miles or 4.5 hours from Crystal Lake, Illinois. Some of us will be leaving Friday evening after work, some of us will be leaving early Saturday morning.

Because the Sturgis crowd will be cruising through the area at the same time, Lynda has already reserved a block of 10 rooms (eight non-smoking/two smoking) for the night of August 4 at the Super 8 in Sparta (about 17 miles from the rally).

If
If anyone has any short stories,
photos, or anything else they’d
like to share with the Chapter,
please send it to us--we’d love to
include it in the next newsletter.
Remember, this newsletter is for
the benefit of all our Chapter
members (and potential members) !

"Been There, Done That"

After-Meeting-Ride
Cambridge

July 21
Immediately following our regularly scheduled monthly meeting, the Red Hawk Riders took a nice ride to Cambridge. I have included below, a complimentary letter about it from Susan Snyder, one of our members. I understand she summed it up pretty well...

"Just wanted to thank Maureen [& Lynn] for organizing the ride to Cambridge last Saturday. Though she wasn't able to get the weather any cooler, she made up for it by finding some nice backroads. Lunch was yummy at a lovely restaurant with an accomodating ice cream scoopin' guy!

It is a cute little town and Art and I are ready to go back and check out some more of the little shops. Always the dilemma; ride the bike and can't bring home cool stuff one finds at the shops or take the car, load it up and miss the bike ride. Maybe that is why we have winter in this area. Anyway, thanks again."
--Susan

Red Hawk Riders'
2-Day Ride to Galena, IL

July 14 & 15
Sadly, I did not attend the Galena ride; however, there are plenty of photos and I've read a ton of great e-mails from those who were able to attend. I've included a couple of those e-mails here:

"Just wanted to share this note from Susan Snyder and I couldn't agree with her more. Thanks Susan!"
--Lynda
(Susan's note below)

"Hats off to Dave and Marge! They planned a well thought out ride and ordered great riding weather. Not only was the route unique, but all the extra safety measures taken, made for a smooth ride. Art and I go to Galena at least once a year and have NEVER taken those back roads. Thanks for the new path. We also have never been on Alpine sleds; what a thrill. I promise to stay out of the way of Lynda and Jim! Looking forward to the trip to Cambridge. It was wonderful to get to know the people in this chapter. What a wonderful group of women and the guys (we chose well) & kids are terrific too."
--Susan Snyder

"Glad you shared her thoughts. I really think we all feel the same - it was an awesome adventure and fun getting to know and be with everyone who went. The weather was spectacular and that had to help. Thanks."
--Martha
