March 2001 Newsletter

Illinois
Red Hawk Riders

A Chapter of Women On Wheels®

The March 17th meeting began at around 10:00 in the morning at the Colonial Café in Crystal Lake, as usual.

In attendance were: Martha Alexander, Lynn & Cary Dahlman, Lynda and Ralph DiGregor, Debi Horner and Jim, Maureen Shreeves, Maxine Smith, Susan & Pat Snyder, Marge Thiessen, Shelle Young, and Suzanne Palm.

It was quite a crowd for a cold and blustery day! We still missed several of the more regularly attending members (you know who you are), but we hope they can make it to next month’s gathering.

Branson, Missouri
Motorcycle Ride & Rally

May 17 - 20
It's about a 600-mile ride. We can take the speedy highways or we can take a slower, more scenic route. If anyone is interested, let us know! More details to come...

Eye of Illinois Campout
June 8 - 10
Lynda would like to get an idea of how many of us are interested in going to the Eye of Illinois a camp-out which will be held at the Mr. Lincoln campground in Springfield. Motels are available nearby for those of us who "don't do camping." Please let Lynda know if you plan to attend. More details to come...

WOW 8th Annual Quad-State
Camp-out in Ontario, WI

August 3 - 5
The Quad-State Camp-out will be at the Stray Cat Cycle Campground on Highway 33, just outside of Wildcat Mountain State Park in Ontario, Wisconsin. Cost: $15.00 per person includes: 2 nights primitive camping, Saturday night cook-out, free coffee, great roads, scenery, friends, and fun.

Ontario is just 40 miles southeast of LaCrosse--a little over 200 miles or 4.5 hours from Crystal Lake, Illinois. Some of us will be leaving Friday evening after work, some of us will be leaving early Saturday morning.

Lynda brought in a copy of the Quad-State camp-out flyer which listed motels and B&Bs in the area in case you didn’t feel like camping primitively at the Stray Cat Campground.

Because the Sturgis crowd will be cruising through the area at the same time, Lynda has already reserved a block of 10 rooms for us at the Super8 in Sparta (about 17 miles from the rally). Eight of the rooms are non-smoking, two are smoking. Our group rate is about $60/double occupancy so if you're interested in one of these rooms, be sure to contact Lynda for both the motel phone and our group confirmation numbers.

Observation Run
Date TBD
Lynda would like to organize an observation run for this summer to raise money for the Home of the Sparrow and to cover our Chapter costs. It was proposed that we meet at a restaurant or forest preserve, ride to a fun turn-around point with activities and/or food, and finally end up at a bowling alley to enjoy beverages and/or more food, games, raffles and etc. We’d like to have the event coordinated and ready to execute by late Spring, so if you have any ideas for a fun destination, turn-around point, meeting place or fund-raising activities, etc., please bring them to the next meeting!

Upcoming Rides

Northwind Riders
Starved Rock, IL Ride

April 21, 2001
April 21 is the third Saturday of the month--our regularly scheduled meeting day. On this particular day, however, the Northwind Riders have planned a ride to Starved Rock. This ride would be a good opportunity for us to get to know our fellow Illinois WOW chapter members, so we are planning to join them there. Instead of our regular meeting, everyone (Red Hawk Riders) should plan to meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Shell gas station located on the corner of Routes 176 and 14 in Crystal Lake. From there we’ll begin our pleasant ride to Starved Rock, where we should be able to join the Northwind Riders at the Lodge for lunch. (If it’s raining or snowing, plan to meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Colonial Cafe in Crystal Lake for our monthly meeting as usual.)

Red Hawk Riders'
2-Day Ride to Galena, IL

July 14 & 15
Marge Thiessen brought some great Galena travel guides for us to peruse. She also researched some hotels in the area and came up with two for us to choose from. Here’s what she found based on double occupancy: Grant Hills Motel - 1 queen $61; 2 double $71; 3 double $76. Amenities: outdoor pool. Country Inn & Suites - 1 King $125; 2 Queen $125 ($10 per extra person). Amenities: Indoor pool w/slide, fitness center, entertainment room w/pool table, etc. and free continental breakfast. AARP discounts can be secured through Marge.

Here’s the plan: Meet at 8:00 a.m. at a place TBD, all gassed up and ready to go (the bikes, not you). Take a scenic route through some interesting backroads on our way to Chestnut Mountain, where we will enjoy a nice, leisurely lunch.

Next, we can check out the Alpine sled for kicks (and try not to lose that nice lunch) and then ride Blackjack Road to Galena.

Once in Galena, we can stroll the streets, visit the shoppes, or take in the historic sites for an hour or two before stopping for dinner. We will overnight at a local establishment TBD (see above).

We’ll start the next morning with breakfast, then head towards home via the scenic Stagecoach Trail, passing through Rockford with a stop for lunch. This will be a relaxing, enjoyable ride for all.

If you are interested in going on the 2-day ride to Galena, let Marge know. Also let her know your hotel preference as she will need to make reservations.

Ride Attendance
It was suggested that those interested in participating in a ride would sign up for it at the previous month's meeting (or call the ride coordinator) so that on the day of the ride, if all aren't present or accounted for, only those who were interested in attending would be phoned. Of course, the ideal way to handle changes in plans would be to call the ride coordinator and let them know you changed your mind.

We still need a few people to organize both the August and September after-meeting rides. Any volunteers???

Motorcycle Safety Foundation
Advanced Riders Course

We had hoped to enroll in the Advanced Rider Course as a group this spring but found that their schedule was already booked through next year. It sounded like the MSF was very willing to accommodate us and encouraged us to call again in January to set up a schedule.

Thank you, Shelle Young, for researching information about the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Advanced Rider Course for us! We appreciate it!
