A Chapter of Women On Wheels®

Last Month's Meeting

May 19, 2001
Many regularly attending members as well as a few newcomers were present at last months meeting. In attendance were: Martha Alexander & Jim, Lynda DiGregor, Debi Horner & Jim, Sue McDonald, Valerie and [daughter] Jessica Money, Suzanne Palm, Maureen Shreeves, Maxine Smith & Dave, Susan Snyder & Art, and Marlene Strom & Bill. We're so glad to welcome more good people into our group!

A few of the regular members of the group were missing (you know who you are), but we’re looking forward to seeing them at next months meeting and riding with them for a little while afterwards (see Upcoming Rides).

Red Hawk Riders'
2-Day Ride to Galena, IL

July 14 & 15
Here’s the plan: Meet at 8:00 a.m. (place TBD) all gassed up and ready to go. We’ll take a scenic route on our way to Chestnut Mountain where we will enjoy a nice, leisurely lunch.

Next, we can check out the Alpine sled for kicks and then take Blackjack Road to Galena. Once in Galena, we can stroll the streets, visit the shoppes, or take in the historic sites for an hour or two before stopping for dinner. We will overnight at the Dubuque Super 8.

We’ll start the next morning with breakfast, then head towards home via the scenic Stagecoach Trail, stopping in Rockford for lunch. A block of eight (non-smoking) rooms has been reserved for the night of July 14 at the Dubuque Super 8 motel at 2730 Dodge St. (about 12 miles west of Galena) at a group rate of about $60/double occupancy. If you’re interested in one of these rooms, call the motel directly at (319) 582-8898. Any rooms not reserved by July 1 will be released. You may cancel your reservation by 4:00 p.m. on the day of arrival.

Your ride coordinators, Marge & David Thiessen, would like a final count at the June 16th meeting so no one will be left out.

Upcoming Rides

After-Meeting-Ride
Union, IL

June 16
Immediately following our regularly scheduled monthly meeting, we will take a leisurely ride along the country roads through the farmlands of Union and the surrounding areas. We’ll leave Colonial Cafe and travel west through Boone County, stopping at the Old West Steakhouse and Buffet in Union for some tasty vittles.

After lunch, we’ll take the short ride to the Illinois Railway Museum to see what they know for a while, then wrap up the afternoon with a nice ride home.

It will be an enjoyable time for all, so please mark your calendars and plan to attend. See ya’ll on Saturday, June 16!

WOW 8th Annual Quad-State
Camp-out in Ontario, WI

August 3 - 5
The Quad-State Camp-out will be at the Stray Cat Cycle Campground on Highway 33, just outside of Wildcat Mountain State Park in Ontario, Wisconsin. Cost: $15.00 per person includes: 2 nights primitive camping, Saturday night cook-out, free coffee, great roads, scenery, friends, and fun.

Ontario is just 40 miles southeast of LaCrosse--a little over 200 miles or 4.5 hours from Crystal Lake, Illinois. Some of us will be leaving Friday evening after work, some of us will be leaving early Saturday morning.

Because the Sturgis crowd will be cruising through the area at the same time, Lynda has already reserved a block of 10 rooms (eight non-smoking/two smoking) for the night of August 4 at the Super 8 in Sparta (about 17 miles from the rally).

Our group rate is about $60/double occupancy. If you're interested in one of these rooms, be sure to call the Sparta Super 8 at (608) 269-8489. Any rooms not reserved by July 22 will be released. You may cancel your reservation by 4:00 p.m. on the day of arrival.

We still need a few people to organize both the August and September after-meeting rides. Any volunteers???

Congratulations Maxine and Dave! Maxine won 2nd Place in the Custom Sportster Class at the Suburban Harley Davidson Bike Show on May 12, thanks to all the efforts of her husband, Dave. Now that’s teamwork!

Street Smart Videos
Maxine (of custom Harley fame), located a volume of Street Smart videos for rent from Illusions Leather shop in Streamwood. For a mere $5, we can rent all 3 videos!

According to Maxine, they are excellent, professional safety videos that cover topics such as: Defensive strategies of street riding, blind spots, intersections, counter-steering, stopping & braking, as well as canyon riding, negotiating curves, and riding in the rain and dark.

We plan to set aside an evening to gather at someone’s home and watch all 3 videos (probably 1.5 hours total). If you’re interested, please let Lynda or Suzanne know your availability.

Hand Signals to Use When Riding in a Group

"Been There, Done That"

After last months meeting, we went for a lovely ride to Wisconsin, where we had lunch at Mukwonago’s Inn the Olden Days Restaurant (c. 1898). After lunch, we stopped to see what novelties the local shoppes had to offer and then headed home.

It was a perfect day for a ride. The roads were winding and fun and the weather was gorgeous! Thank you, Jim & Martha, for coordinating this ride for us. A job well done!

If
If anyone has any short stories,
