Welcome
to the Frontier : System Guide
Welcome
to my internet site, take the Frontier Challenge, download
additional files, read the FAQ's, or view our links. You
are always welcome at Frontier : A System Guide
Frontier
First Encounters (FFE) was a game produced by GameTec, namely
David Braben (the co-author of Elite with Ian Bell).
Produced as a follow-up to the immensely successful Frontier :
Elite II, it was released all but untested and was full of bugs.
Patches were
released but the damage was done. The
FAQ Section is located under Downloads. FFE
is very similar to Frontier : Elite II, but the planet's are
texture mapped and the graphics are generally better all
round. But the AI of the other ships lacks that of
Frontier and especially that of Elite. David Braben
explains that this was due to FFE attempting to be more
realistic (read alt.fan.elite).

Many
people play FFE just for the superior sound and graphics, rather
than Frontier. But by far the biggest draw card is the
hand coded missions contained in FFE. Rather than just
random computer generated missions that existed in Frontier, there
is a definite plot (with random missions as well) that makes the
universe feel even more alive. The
player may pick up as little or as much of the plot as they
want, and can follow it all in various 'Journals' one can
subscribe to.

The
New Layout I
hope you like the new layout - it should be a bit quicker when
loading the page now that things are a bit more
simplified. Also the focus of the website has changed, now
the Frontier Challenge and the System Database are the primary
functions of the website. The
System Database This
is a database with [nearly] every system with a starport. That's
a lot of systems! At the moment it is in Access
97/2000 format, so if you don't have access you'll have to wait! You
can find the System Database in the 'Downloads' section. Dean
