From its beginning, the Liberation Army was called Operasi Papua Merdeka (Free Papua Operation) when it was formally announced by Frerry Awom in Manokwari (the bird's head) with the help of Mr. Loudwick Mandatjan, an Manokwari Tribesman who was also a family members of the tribe's leader.

Some years later, both Awom and Mandatjan were arrested and imprisoned by Indonesia, accusing them cooperating with the Communist from the USSR (during the time when Indonesia was fired up in fighting communism all over Indonesia). The U.S.A was told not to do anything about the effort of West Papua annexation into Indonesia by calling them as communist allies.

Some years later, the OPM changed its name into Organisasi Papua Merdeka (Papua Independence Organisation - which is now called the Free Papua Movement). The OPM was seen from its beginning as the armed organisation, fighting for independence of West Papua.

The issue of independence struggle against colonialism then spread into another bird's head region, Sorong region, and there was a war between Indonesian army and the OPM members. Thousands of Papuans died in this war.

In late 1970s (1975-1977) OPM successfully mobilised Papuans in the central highlands of Baliem Valleys (Balime, Kimbim, Tiom, Magi, Kelela, Mbogondini, Karubaga, Kwiyawagi and other districts in Jayawijaya rengency. The war started in 1977 and ended in late 1970s.

The first headquarter established in this region was in Tari Mountain region, called the Taripura Headquarter. OPM's delegates that mobilised the people there were led by Alex Derey (who is currently living in Holland). Mr. Alex Derey was appointed as the Minister for Information by Mr. Jacob Prai, the Chair of the OPM, Victoria Headquarter in PNG-West Papua border region.

According to Alex Derey, the purpose of the mobilisation was not to start a war, but only to inform the people to be aware of the existence of the OPM and what it stands for. One of the members, namely Mathius Tabu, the younger Brother of another OPM leader, Marthin Tabu, created the situation until it led to the war, which now called the 1977 nightmare of Baliem people.

Marthin Tabu surrendered to Indonesia in Port Numbay, but then arrested and until today, we do not know whether he is still alive or dead in one of the prisons in Java. Mathius Tabu was then killed not long after his elder brother surrendered.
