Hello all: I will like to ask something that worries me. Is autodesk going to give up mechanical desktop in favor of inventor? or is this a false rumor. Thanks in advanced Ariel

Autodesk is not going to "give up" Mechanical Desktop. MDT 7 is still in the works, and because it's it's built off of Autocad it's pretty easy to keep releasing MDT along with every release of Autocad.
But it's true that Autodesk is putting most of their effort into Inventor. MDT is reaching a ceiling with it's abilities. You can only do so much 3D when you're building off of a 2D package. That's why Autodesk is giving Inventor to all MDT customers on subscription.
If you have any other questions please let me know. Joe Bartels

Not just on subscription. The new 'inventor series' includes both inventor5.3 and mdt6 and is available as an upgrade to mdt6 so when anyone upgrades their mdt they will get inventor for 'free' I have been told I can upgrade mdt6 to inventor series for UK£395 which is a bargain. one thought though ..I think they have to ship mdt with inventor at the moment because inventor just cannot import mdt files very well! I'm sure glad I upgraded to MDT6 in July before the first of the price increases
..oh wait a minute, price increases then threw Inventor in with it...hmmm time to
proceed to the nearest wall and begin banging my head.

It's nice for the people who did the companion upgrade though, because they got inventor for £1990 AND kept their mdt seat they can upgrade BOTH for just the upgrade fee so they get 2x mdt and 2x inventor... wow!
Steve.

Steve.. That depends on how you view it. As a single seat user, I bought Companion for £1,990, as opposed to a frozen MDT5 at £1,190 (in order that I could continue to use MDT/Vanilla AutoCad and protect my investment).
Ten months later, everyone who chose to freeze their licence, is now being given what I paid an additional £800 for.
When there is only one user, this is not such a great deal. John

No Steve it's not not such a great deal at all! May be nice for a company, but not for "people". As a single companion seat owner, I paid $3K for what others are getting for nothing or a couple of hundred, depending on the subscription fee increase. With the change I get a second seat that's of no use to me and can either let the subscription on it lapse (I get nothing) or maintain both seats (2x subscription) and keep something I don't have a use for.
