OPAL MINER PROSPECTOR

MATTING TREES

Old Ron Gardner and Jimmy Vaughn, quite often went over to the Glengarry Opal field, 8-9 miles through the bush tracks to bend the arm (drunk rum mostly)and for a chin wag (talk) with the other miners of that field. As you would guess, they always came home at some late time of night or early morning. At this time, Ron and I were mining partners and I would pick him up for work each morning. This morning as I went to pick Ron up for work, I noticed that the front of the car (1954 Dodge) was in a terrible state. Mudguard hung off,the grill in a mess. half of the bonnet (hood) needed a lot of work done to it also. This was not a rare thing with Ron at any time, but never this bad. When I questioned Ron as to what happened, Ron replied that the trees must have been mating on the full moon and running across the roadway, but the one I got won't be doing any mating, cause I layed him straight out ready for the mill.
