LATEST NEWS - by Matt Singh and Andrew Evans

Here's the latest happens in the world of wrestling…

World Wrestling Federation

Jim Ross continues to have meetings with potential talents for WCW. Ross says he is confident that Rob Van Dam will sign for either the WWF or WCW in the near future. However some say this won't happen as he and Paul Heyman had a major falling at the end of Van Dam's ECW run. Tommy Dreamer is expected to sign with the WWF within the next few months. His role within the company isn't expected to be limited to wrestling, he may be offered the chance to book as well.

There is still no word on when Ken Shamrock and Shawn Michaels will return.

Management is said to be happy with the way Terry 'Rhyno' Gerin has performed thus far.

The Mummy Returns is expected to hit the $70 million mark in gross receipts by the end of business tonight, making it the second highest grossing first weekend for a movie in history.

Undertaker had plastic surgery as soon as he got off the plane in Newark resulting from an injury suffered at the WWF Insurrextion PPV in the UK. He was badly cut when a piece of Steve Austin's knee brace, which had partially come undone during the main event, ripped at his ear.

For those who did not see Insurrextion, the stand out matches were the 2/3 Falls match between Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle, which makes you wonder what gimmick match they are going to come up with for these two at Judgment Day in 2 weeks time...a ladder match maybe? The other top match was the best contest yet between Chris Jericho and William Regal, a match far better than their Wrestlemania or Backlash matches. Overall, a fairly good event, but uneventful, which isn't unusual for the WWF UK PPV's.

World Championship Wrestling

The tentative start date is still 13th June, with the first show to be aired on 16th June, this being dependent on the television deal being finalised. The new roster is said to be consisted of wrestlers that include some hard working long time Indy grapplers, as well as name talent along with some valets/managers.

Elsewhere

Hulk Hogan has been talking to representatives for Universal and Fox about the possibility of putting together a new pro wrestling promotion. However, Fox is said to be reluctant to enter into the venture due to the way WCW failed.

Tickets went on sale at short notice on Saturday for the "WrestleXpress 2001" event in Coventry, England on 20th October, which is headlined by Rob Van Dam v Steve Corino, Juventud Guerrera v Psicosis, a 4-way for the FWA British Title, and Vampiro v a mystery opponent. Head over to www.wrestlexpress.com for more information.

RUDO RAMBLINGS - by Martin Walton

It's been a quite an eventful and downright bizarre week in Mexico this week, so let's get on with the week's news.

In EMLL news, Tarzan Boy has vacated the NWA Light Heavyweight Title due to injury after breaking his neck around 6 weeks ago. A tournament will be held sometime this month in order to crown a new champion with the likes of Atlantis, Blue Panther, Black Warrior and Satanico being involved. Rayo De Jalisco Jr. has revealed that his son will be starting with EMLL in the upcoming weeks (likely to be pushed straight to the top). Rayo will revert to just Rayo Del Jalisco with his son taking the Rayo Del Jalisco Jr. name. Also expect a hair vs. hair match between rising stars Ricky Marvin and Virus within the next month or so.

In AAA news, an independent benefit show for Charley Manson will take place on May 12, which indicates that AAA boss Antonio Pena isn't paying for Manson's medical bills. If anybody is in the Los Angeles area then tickets are already on sale for the big AAA event at the Olympic Auditorium on May 18.

Line-up for the AAA TV Taping in Nuevo Laredo tonight:

MAIN EVENT: Sangre Chicana/Latin Lover/Heavy Metal vs. Cibernetico/Abismo Negro/Electro Shock

SEMI-MAIN EVENT: El Zorro/Mascara Sagrada/La Parka Jr. vs. Jerry Estrada/El Texano/Pirata Morgan

TERCERA: Psicosis/Histeria/Mosco De La Merced/Maniaco vs. May Flowers/Nygma/Pimpinela Escarlata/Polvo De Estrellas - Extreme Match

In Tijuana news, next weeks main event in Tijuana is shaping up to be Gigante Silva (Giant Silva) and Mil Mascaras vs. Chuck Palumbo (WTF!), Apollo Dantes and Dr Wagner Jr. That possibly could be the worst match of the year. The semi main event however looks a great match with Hijo Del Santo, Nicho El Millonario (Psicosis) and La Parka vs. Scorpio Jr., Fuerza Guerrera and Juventud Guerrera. In addition to that, expect appearances from Tijuana regulars such as Damien, Halloween and Rey Misterio Sr.

Results from last Friday's show were:

Kato Kung Lee defeated Hijo Del Diablo (said to be awful).

Rey Misterio Sr., Halloween and Damien 666 defeated Super Porky, Super Parka and Scorpio Jr. (good comedy match).

El Hijo Del Santo, Nicho El Millonairo and La Parka defeated Scorpio Jr., El Hijo Del Pierroth and Juventud Guerrera (very good match).

THE PURORESU RUNDOWN - by Andrew Evans

Once again, it's time to roll all the news from Japan this week into the rundown...

The PRIDE 14 match between Kazuyuki Fujita and Yoshihiro Takayama on 27th May at the Yokohama Arena will not be for the IWGP Title after all.

All signs point to the main event of the 20th July, Sapporo Dome (52,000 seats) show for New Japan to be headlined by Riki Choshu vs. Naoya Ogawa in a singles match. The match has been built up after Choshu and Nakanishi defeated Murakami and Ogawa at this past Saturday's Fukuoka Dome show. The angle is that Naoya Ogawa wants to put Riki Choshu back into retirement.

Despite denials from NOAH office worker Remi Momota, Mitsuharu Misawa is going to start searching for talent in America starting on the 26th or 27th May, a couple of days after NOAH's tour-ending 25th May, Kanagawa, Yokohama Bunka Gym show. The American trip will be for 9 days, but Misawa may just be hanging out in Hawaii for most of the time and make a quick swing to the lower 48 states. Misawa also announced that his current TV deal with Nippon TV, which started in April, is only good for three months and not a yearly contract. Misawa announced that he will be in Honolulu, Tennessee, and California for talent evaluation. Misawa will also have a private meeting with Harley Race's school in Kansas City and will evaluate Race's school talent.

FMW ran their annual 5th May show titled "Kawasaki Legend 2001" at the Kawasaki Stadium parking lot, which drew a paid crowd of 10,500. Of the 9 matches in total, 6 went under 10 minutes, and the main event was a tag match pitting Great Sasuke and Hayabusa against Tetsuhiro Kuroda and Mr. Gannosuke in a 15,000 Volt Octagon Cage Electric Bomb Death Match. During the match, Hayabusa's white costume was said to be toasted from the explosions and had turned black, but he came back, finally nailing Gannosuke with a Firebird Splash and a H Thunder for the win in just over 20 minutes. The Great Sasuke suffered a broken left ear-drum from the explosives in the match, but still worked the Michinoku Pro show the next day, because it was the tour-ender.

And lastly, if we needed any proof that wrestling has gone completely insane...on Friday in Sapporo, Jun Kasai defeated Men's Teioh in a CZW Junior Heavyweight Title match under "CZW Style Philadelphia Banana Rules Match" after he ate a banana. Yes, you read that correctly, a match was won after someone ate a banana. I'm sure Vince McMahon is livid right now.

THE DANGER ZONE - by Martin Walton

The following parody contains extreme language and should not be viewed by children

The following is the transcript of a recent contract meeting between Vince McMahon and Jerome Young (New Jack).

Vince: Welcome Jerome, please make yourself at home.

New Jack: (Puts his feet on Vince's desk and pulls out a bottle of Cider).

Vince: It's a great pleasure to have you here, I've been a big fan of your work for a number of years now.

New Jack: I can dig that Vinny Mac, it's about time you had a bad ass street thug in the WWF.

Vince: (stuttering his words) We do have D'Lo Brown.

New Jack: (Stares at Vince).

Vince: Anyway Jerome, before we talk money, do you have any ideas about the direction of your character?

New Jack: Yeah I've got some shit. I was thinking about making my style a bit more violent and maybe introduce this big ass 4 foot machete into my act. I'm sure I can cut people up real good with that bad boy.

Vince: (starting to panic) Well, do you have any other ideas?

New Jack: Yeah, when I've finished as a wrestler I'd like to get into presenting, maybe co-host Livewire for you on a Saturday morning. I'm a real good talker after puffing on a spliff.

Vince: (Adam's apple bobs) Good god.

New Jack: I can see you are digging that.

Vince: I had slightly different ideas for your character, take a look at this (Vince goes into his drawer and pulls out a pair of MC Hammer style pants). I'm picturing you and K-Kwik as a rapping tag team with you doing some dance moves.

New Jack: You've got to be fucking joking, I ain't doing that shit. I've killed 4 four men for Christ's sake!

Vince: You do as I tell you to do. I'm paying you the money here, and if you don't like it then I'll make you job to Chyna on a nightly basis.

New Jack: (Reaches into his pocket for his knife) I can't see that happening somehow Vince (pulls his knife out).

Vince: (Rips his jacket and shirt off in one fluid motion and goes into a boxing stance) Come get some bitch!

(Jack gets ready to pounce but Brisco and Patterson break through the door and jump onto Jack and proceed to beat on him).

Vince: Hold that son of a bitch up! (Vince proceeds to beat on Jack with punches). Get him out of here!

Vince: (Walks up to his office window just in time to see The Stooges throw Jack out of the building) Nobody messes with Vincent K. McMahon (cackles with laughter).

THIS WAS A PARODY, MEANING, A WORK OF FICTION

PEARLS OF WISDOM - by Andrew Evans

KING OF THE RING?

The WWF Royal Rumble is an event that has a 30-man "Royal Rumble" as its main attraction, with the added stipulation being that the winner of the Rumble goes on to face the WWF Champion at Wrestlemania. This creates 8-10 weeks of TV time for the WWF to hype up the main event at their biggest show of the year, and also allows time for changes in the main event match and story line tweaks, if needed (see: 1999 and 2000). Two months of build-up to The Rock v Steve Austin this year and Shawn Michaels v Steve Austin in 1998 provided fans with some good TV. There was huge heat between the competitors; hence anticipation for the mentioned matches was very high.

But, this amount of friction and excitement only comes around for 2 months of the WWF calendar, so why not try and recreate it at another time in the year? The King of the Ring is usually not a great PPV, and was one of the worst last year, mainly due to a lacking tournament...oh yeah, and the Patterson v Brisco Evening Gown match. So, why not use the King of the Ring like the Royal Rumble? King of the Ring takes place in June, and soon after, in August, comes...Summerslam. Simply enough, the tournament could be utilised so that the winner goes on through Fully Loaded and then to Summerslam where he faces the WWF Champion for the title in the main event. Once again, there would be 2 months of hype, and so the WWF quickly have a second show in the year with a huge main event.

In the past, the King of the Ring tournament has been used to build up talent. In 1996, Steve Austin won. In 1997, Triple H won, and as we all remember, in the year 2000, Kurt Angle won. After their wins, both Austin and Triple H waited approximately two years to capture the WWF World Heavyweight Title. Lets take an example here...say, Chris Jericho wins the King of the Ring in the year 2001, and lets also say that Steve Austin is still the WWF Champion going into Summerslam. Now, without the "winner gets a title match" stipulation, Jericho would win the tournament, but his victory would probably be forgotten about, and he'd stay in mid-card. With the stipulation though, it would enable Jericho to enter the main event frame, and the WWF can hype and build him up for 2 months, which would lead to a match never seen before, the huge face, Chris Jericho against and the huge heel, Steve Austin. This would also shut a few people up who say the WWF product is stale, and that no one is ever pushed due to the "glass ceiling". Kurt Angle was a one-off to move up the ladder so quickly, and has done so much in so little time that he couldn't help but be pushed to the sky, eventually winning the number one title in October at No Mercy.

If Jericho ever had a chance to build up a more serious character, something which he hasn't been able to do in the past, then it would be in the two months leading up to the biggest match of his career. Even from this situation, if the 2 month push for the mid-card Jericho isn't a complete success, then the hype would still be there for Summerslam, as would the match quality, which would still result in a decent payoff for all involved. Anyone could be put into this situation whether it be Chris Benoit, or any other wrestler waiting to reach top tier status. Even the big rematch between The Rock and Steve Austin could be laid out here, as maybe a weakened or injured Rock enters the tournament, only just scraping past his opponents, and the only other wide option to build up to the match is used, with a Rock as face v Austin as heel feud (Rock as heel v Austin as face at Wrestlemania 15 and Rock as face v Austin as face at WM X-Seven being the others).

So, many options are there that can result in something positive and "fresh", but what are the chances it will happen?
