JAP ATTACK - by Nick Wright
Sup Jap Grap fans, you're in for another dosage of the Jap attack!
This week Hiroyoshi Tenzan announced his intention to face "The Japanese Dusty", Riki Choshu. Even though they will fight on February 18th, Tenzan claims he can't wait till then and has to take him out now, so apparently he's gonna give him a terrorist attack. You look puzzled? Well, like you I have no idea what that indicates, but for Choshu's case I hope it works, cause those fans don't wanna see another Choshu-Hashimoto incident again.
Also, Don Frye, Keiji Muto and Shinjiro Ohtani formed a group known as the Outsiders. Chalk that as another one up, that Choshu still thinks its 1989.
A few weeks ago, Tatsumi Fujinami defeated Yoshiaki Fujiwara and then declared he is stopping the retirement countdown to get into shape. Sounds like the old wrestling nutshell of don't wanna leave to me, but either way these two will meet again!
In the "this was a WWF angle, but lets change it a bit" section of Japan, FMW definitely flipped its lid. After winning his retirement match back in January, Kodo Fuyuki isn't leaving the squared circle just yet; in fact he's said he never was going to retire anyway. This makes WCW angles seem quite creative and original. To make matters weirder, Kyoko Inoue now wants to marry Tetsuhiro Kuroda (who has to marry her...you see he lost to Fuyuki in a said retirement match and had to marry Inoue). This has now led to a six-man tag match where Inoue has got to pin Kuroda in order to marry him. Complicated stuff! That's the newest way to pin a man down to marriage that I've heard of.
And finally, my regards go to Kenta Kobashi who received more bad luck than a Rick Steiner opponent does, last month. Kobashi needed an operation on his knees, and after having that (which would put him out for 6 months), he then found out he may need an artificial knee joint or lose an incredible amount of weight to take pressure of the knees. To make matters even worse, he then found out he had problems with his left elbow joint and had a broken bone in his knee too (which were described as looking like knees of an 80 year old man). At the age of 33, it seems that Kenta's glory days and possible career are over. After witnessing some of the most intense tussles of all time with him and the likes of Misawa and Vader, its a terrible shame to see the likely career end of a legend.
In the words of WCW, "things only seem to get worse".
Sionara, until next week!

SABU CAREER PROFILE - by Martin Walton
Real Name = Terry Brunk.
Legitimate Height = 5'10".
Legitimate Weight = 210lbs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A young Terry Brunk was always a fan of pro wrestling, his real life uncle The Sheik being a major star in both America and Japan. As he was growing up, Terry would occasionally go on the road with his uncle throughout Michigan and Ohio. It was obvious from an early age that Sabu would follow his uncles footsteps and step between the ropes. Eventually the Sheik agreed to train Sabu and regularly tortured him during harsh training sessions. Sabus first ever show was as a manager in late 1984 and he was quickly jumped by none other than The Sheik who cut Sabus head open with a pencil and gave him a brutal beating.
Sabus first ever match was against a local Detroit Indy worker called the Road Warrior in early 1985. For the next 3 years, Sabu travelled throughout Michigan and Ohio learning the ropes and gaining experience. It was during 1988 that Sabu first ventured outside of Michigan and Ohio to work dates and really started to perfect his high flying offence that would make him a star. Sabu was quickly gaining a cult following on the Indy scene, but yet he was still very green and no major organisations were willing to sign him.
Sabus first big break was when FMW owner Atsushi Onita contacted Sabu about working a few dates for the company in 1991, and those few dates turned into a 3 year stint with the hardcore Japanese promotion. Sabu collided with Atsushi Onita and Tarzan Goto on dozens of occasions in barbed wire matches also often tagging with Tiger Jeet Singh and his ageing uncle, The Sheik. Sabus most high profile match in FMW occurred on May 6th 1992, when along with The Sheik, they faced Onita and Goto in a no rope barbed wire fire death match with the entire ring engulfed in flames. In the end, all four guys bailed out of the ring due to the inferno in the ring. As a result of this, The Sheik slipped into a coma due to severe heat stroke. This ensured that the match would forever have a cult following amongst hardcore fans. Sabus performances in Japan were catching the eye of promoters in the US and several organisations contacted him but Sabu turned them all down including an approach from the WWF.
Eventually, Sabu agreed to work a few dates for Eastern Championship wrestling and debuted on 1st October 1993. He made a strong start by defeating the Tazmaniac and immediately was a big hit with the fans of ECW due to his table-breaking gimmick. Soon after this, his work with ECW became his number one priority and by the end of 1994 he was totally through with FMW. During this time, Sabu became the number one star in ECW by defeating Shane Douglas for the Heavyweight Title and went on to link arms with the Tazmaniac to defeat The Public Enemy in the first ever tables match for the ECW Tag Team Titles. And at this point in his career, most wrestling experts considered Sabu as one of the top 5 workers in the world. However, Sabus career would soon take a new turn. Sabu was scheduled to team up with the Tazmaniac to face Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko and The Public Enemy in a three-way dance at the ECW Arena, but no-showed the event and accepted a booking with New Japan Pro Wrestling instead. As a result, ECW booker, Paul Heyman, immediately fired Sabu.
Sabu started full time with New Japan in January 1995 and remained with them for the rest of the year with the highlight of his stay being his unseating of Koji Kanemoto to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title on 3rd May 1995 at the Fukuoka Dome. Sabu also signed a short-term contract with WCW during the fall, but was at odds with management from day one, and quit before the end of the year. At this point of his career, Sabu obtained a reputation for being difficult to work with due to his unwillingness to job and to be billed as a junior heavyweight. Sensing he had nothing to fall back on, Sabu contacted Paul Heyman and agreed to come back to ECW. He returned to ECW at the 1995 November to Remember and was quickly ushered into a feud with Taz, although they wouldnt actually face each other until April 1997. During the early part of 1996, a fellow Sheik trainee named Rob Van Dam entered ECW after a short stay in WCW. Sabu and Rob Van Dam would be involved with each other for the next 3 years.
Sabu originally feuded with Rob Van Dam throughout the summer of 1996, with Sabu coming out on top most occasions. Throughout this time, Taz continually challenged Sabu only for Sabu to decline Tazs advances. Sabu and Rob Van Dam eventually became a team and feuded with Doug Furnas and Phil Lafon and more noticeably with The Eliminators, who they faced at the 1996 November to Remember in a match that divided the fans at the ECW Arena. For the first time ever in ECW, the fans were growing tired of Sabu.
Taz and Sabu eventually agreed to face each other at the first ever ECW PPV, "Barely Legal" on 13th April 1997, and sensing the growing backlash he was receiving, Sabu turned heel and joined forces with Bill Alfonso and Rob Van Dam after he was defeated by Taz. Sabu and RVD quickly became the top heels after pledging allegiance to the WWF, although at this point, Sabus ring skills were starting to decline. However, Sabu captured the ECW World Heavyweight Title once again in a brutal no rope barbed wire match against his godfather, Terry Funk in August of 1997 at a show named "Born to be Wired". Sabu quickly lost the title in a three-way dance to Shane Douglas the following weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
From there, Sabu moved into a feud with The Sandman and the two collided in a horribly messy match at November to Remember 1997 which further illustrated just how much Sabu's skills had fallen. He rebounded with a solid win over The Sandman at Living Dangerously 1998 in a "double canes" match and entered the tag team division once again with RVD as they unseated the team of Lance Storm and Chris Candido for the tag belts in June 1998 in a good match. For the rest of the year, the team of Sabu and Rob Van Dam clashed with the Dudley Boyz and the Triple Threat in a series of disjointed matches, while turning face in the process.
In early 1999, Sabu was moved back into the World Title picture against Taz and Shane Douglas and challenged Taz for the ECW World Title at Living Dangerously 1999 but came up short in a very strong match, which showed signs that the old Sabu had returned. Sabu moved into a feud with youngster Justin Credible and two clashed throughout the summer of 1999 in a good series of matches with Justin Credible winning the blow off match at Anarchy Rulz in September 1999. Following this, it seemed that Paul Heyman had lost interest in Sabu with him having no story line and acting as under-card filler at that years November to Remember show against his good friend, Chris Candido.
Sensing that his days in ECW were over, Sabu opened negations with WCW and was all set to sign for them until Paul Heyman blocked the move claiming Sabu could not breach his ECW contract. Sabu agreed to return to ECW but his return lasted one week when he found out Heyman wanted him to put over younger wrestlers for the remaining time on his contract. This led to a bitter war of words between Heyman and Sabu with Heyman claiming that Sabu couldnt work for any promotion in the US while still under ECW contract. Sabu ignored this and worked for California based XPW, which led to Heyman filing a lawsuit against Sabu, which has been recently dropped.
The next stage in Sabu's career came when he captured the NWA World Heavyweight Title from Mike Rapada in late 2000. The reign was a disaster due to Sabu clearly being in no fit state to wrestle any longer, and only recently participated in a disastrous match for the NWA Wildside group in Georgia, which led to Sabu receiving harsh criticism from most fans and experts.
It seems that after Sabu's 15 years of taking crazy bumps, the physical toll has caught up with him and it seems he will spend the rest of his days working small Indy shows in backwater towns until his body finally completely gives up on him. Sabu was once a revolutionary figure, and along with Mick Foley brought hardcore wrestling into the mainstream. But unlike Foley, Sabu carried on when his body wasn't up to it, and subsequently has paid the price for that this year. Although Sabu may be somewhat of a depressing figure now, hell certainly go down as a true pioneer and a bonifide modern day legend.

WRESTLING HUMOUR - by Marc Lessard
Over the last couple of weeks, the great wrestling company of Extreme Championship Wrestling has been forced to disband. Many different things have led to the demise of ECW, including:
1. The losing of their TV contracts. 2. Not enough money. 3. Francine is spreading the Ebola virus. 4. New Jack threatening to "Cut all yo asses up."
Recently, we caught up with ECW superstar Tommy Dreamer, who is currently living in ECW owner Paul Heyman's basement, eating a diet consisting of rice, wheat and expired beer belonging to the Sandman. We asked him about his feelings about this whole ordeal and he answered us with this...
"Well, this really sucks. I told Paul that no other federation wanted me, so he lets me stay in his basement. Oh, and don't worry about Heyman's cash flow, because he is the mastermind of the greatest wrestling promotion ever, E-C-Dubbya!"
We then took Tommy's crack pipe away from him.
We also talked with Mr. Heyman himself who was in the process of playing human hangman, or so it seems. When asking him about ECWs status, he replied with, "Well you see, ECW is a lot like a sled. Once it gets to the top it only has one direction, straight to the bottom."
We left as Heyman tightened the knot around his neck.
That is all we have for you now, stay tuned for further updates on the ECW story.

"THE CHOSEN COLUMN" - by Nick Wright
This week I discuss the gimmicks of wrestling!
Imagine you're a preliminary wrestler, and you have arrived at Titan Towers. You step out of your car and take the long walk up to the boss' office. On your way up you think of who you might wrestle, what you might do, or heck, maybe even your salary, but in the back of your mind there is one thing bothering you, the gimmick!
It can make or break a career. Ask Dwayne Johnson, Steve (Austin) Williams or Terry Bollea and they will tell you in between counting their money, their gimmick is what made them what they are. Then again ask Peter Polaco (Aldo Montoya), Chris Candido, or Allen Sarven and they will tell you how gimmick almost ruined their careers, in between cringing at their former selves.
However talented a wrestler may be, a gimmick is more important today than talent and talent combined. For example take the new WWF boys, Justin Credible, Jerry Lynn, and Rhino. They will be assigned something new when they make their WWF debuts, maybe even a new gimmick or persona. When they enter that curtain and the crowd greets them with cheers, boo's or indifference, they will realise how powerful a gimmick is and realise that this is what they will be for the next 3 years, and this is what can make or break their career.
I believe it was Ted DiBiase who said that everyone pays the price to the Million Dollar Man, and in Rhino, Lynn and Credible's case, for the next 3 years they might be paying the price for Vince, the billion dollar man. They can only hope that their careers don't spiral down on one bad gimmick, like many have before them.

"PEARLS OF WISDOM" - by Andrew Evans
"You know Diesel is almost as tall as I am. Hey, I'm standing on my wallet! Mwhahahaha!" - "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase at the 1994 WWF Royal Rumble.
PROSPECTS FOR THE ECW WRESTLERS IN OTHER FEDERATIONS
As we've all seen by the dealing of Taz (z) in the last 12 months or so, the WWF haven't taken to some of their signings from ECW all that well. So this week, I thought Id take an in-depth look at the possible future of the current ECW wrestlers in other federations, as it seems they will have to find work elsewhere in the near future. The first person to jump to one of the big two was
JUSTIN CREDIBLE - to the WWF
Pros: Already familiar with the WWF from his time as P.J. Walker and Aldo Montoya, so should fit in with the suits and locker room immediately. Credible is also good friends with Triple H, who is known to have say in the booking of certain WWF angles and shows. This strong link could possibly push him further up the card.
Cons: He currently has one of the worst catch phrases in wrestling, and to get over in the WWF, this will need to change.
Possible Future: Knowing of his links with Triple H, and as being the ECW World Champion for approximately 5 months of last year, it wouldn't surprise me to see Credible hold the WWF Intercontinental Title at some point in the year 2001. I'm sure that Triple H will encourage the head booker(s) to push him, maybe suggesting putting them in a program together, which would of course elevate Credible even more. Credible shouldn't drop to a lower level by the evidence here, and he should go on to do big things in the WWF, heading into 2002 with a lot of momentum, most likely as a heel.
RHINO - to the WWF
Pros: Rhino is the current ECW Unified Champion (holds both World and TV Titles), so is currently seen as a big name. If he keeps a similar heel gimmick, his promos should remain almost unaffected apart from a tone down in language. These intense interviews fit in very well with his character, and Rhino can not be seen as weak on "the stick".
Cons: The table gimmick within the WWF is set with the Dudley Boyz, and no one else will be sharing it on a permanent basis. Rhino's "Gore" will probably be taken away from him by the injury conscious (and rightfully so) WWF. If this does happen, it will leave a gap in his arsenal. Rhino may find himself with a lack of suitable opponents in the WWF as well.
Possible Future: Rhino's future in the WWF is tough to call. His cons seem to outweigh his pros here. Even though he is a good wrestler with an amateur background, his work doesn't come close to that of Jerry Lynn or Credible. Expect him to keep a similar, but more toned down character to the Rhino of ECW, and if Vince McMahon sees him as a top tier player, then he will get the push AND be successful.
JERRY LYNN - verbally agreed to sign with the WWF
Pros: One of the top wrestlers around today and will put on great matches with the likes of Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho and Eddie Guerrero given the chance. Lynn also has a great finisher in the Cradle Piledriver, which could help him out a lot.
Cons: OK, so Lynn is almost definitely going to lose his "New FN Show" nickname, and will need repackaging for his WWF debut, especially without Rob Van Dam to work with. Lynn is not a recognised mic worker, which along with being under 6-foot could hold him back somewhat in the WWF ranks. Another addition to this list would be that his Cradle Piledriver could possibly be outlawed by the WWF, which would temporarily set him back.
Possible Future: At first, I would expect Jerry Lynn to find it difficult to get over and will probably find himself in a similar position to Chris Benoit last year. In the WWF, Lynn will have to work around the fact that like Tazz, he would be seen as small compared to the majority of the other WWF wrestlers. An improvement on his mic skills will be needed similar to what Benoit has achieved in the past 12 months. But even so, I feel that Lynn's great technical skills can earn him a good spot in the WWF, and with the amount of similar workers currently with the company, Vince McMahon would be mad not to push him.
SUPER CRAZY - looking to head to WCW
Pros: Can wrestle with the best of them, and under Eric Bischoff's WCW, Bischoff being known for being a big fan of cruiserweight wrestling, Crazy should appear on WCW TV frequently if he decides to sign with them.
Cons: The mic work factor comes into play again as Crazy isn't a known mic worker, but as a WCW CW, he may not need to do all that much, and can probably get over with the WCW fans on his wrestling talent alone.
Possible Future: Super Crazy will be a top lower card worker but will find it tough pushing further up the card than that. Then again, he'll probably only be able to work with his best opponents, the high flyers, in the lower card and a push to mid card could result in some weird looking matches against the likes of Rick Steiner or General Rect... I mean, Hugh Morrus. Hopefully, we'll see him going after the WCW Cruiserweight Title in the year 2001.
YOSHIHIRO TAJIRI - looking to head to the WWF
Pros: Top ring worker and much like Jerry Lynn, he will be able to blend his style well with that of the WWF's technical mid-card players. If Tajiri is able to utilise the "green mist" in the WWF, this should work brilliantly as it would come in as brand new to WWF only fans. The green mist would add the certain entertainment factor that is needed for WWF wrestlers.
Cons: Once again, the average ECW fan is not the same as the average WWF fan, meaning Tajiri's jump could be hit with his weakness of poor mic skills, and the best way to overcome this would be to have someone do the talking for him. No Japanese wrestler has ever really made it big in North America, and the WWF are the prime examples of not pushing their overseas talent.
Possible Future: He would probably fare better in WCW than the WWF, seeing WCW's current management. Tajiri could very possibly be wasted in the WWF and placed as a new member of Kai En Tai, or put in another ridiculous comedy role that would never showcase his true talent. I'll put his chances of WWF success simply down to this: How well will the green mist get over?
ROB VAN DAM - currently booked to tour with All Japan Pro Wrestling
Pros: One of the most athletic people to ever step in the ring, and like Lynn and Tajiri, Van Dam can work great matches with almost anyone, showing off his innovative spots and manoeuvres. RVD is also more over than anyone in ECW, a characteristic that he can carry with him wherever he performs.
Cons: When Van Dam had talks with the WWF, it was rumoured that he valued himself higher than they did, so may find it tougher than other ECW wrestlers to find a deal that he will accept.
Possible Future: A move to the WWF or WCW is unlikely, and Van Dam would probably be better off staying in Japan where he has more freedom over his wrestling, and also where he can compete in longer matches than either of the big two would offer him. Wherever RVD is though, he's sure to do well, but after he finishes touring with AJPW on the Excite Series, his future is uncertain.
STEVE CORINO - no real news, but probably sliding towards WCW
Pros: The best bleeder in the business today, which always adds to the look of a match! In addition, Corino is handy on the mic, as we saw while he acted as Tajiri's speaker in ECW. He also is now well recognised after winning the ECW World Heavyweight Title last year.
Cons: There is not really anything obvious in this section as Corino is a fine all rounder. His mic work, wrestling skill and "Old School" gimmick should go down well in either of the big two, so he shouldn't have a problem fitting in anywhere.
Possible Future: To be a upper card wrestler, Corino simply needs a little time and a small push in the right direction with his Old School gimmick, which if played out properly could show notable similar qualities to Kurt Angle's successful "Olympic Gold Medallist" persona. Steve Corino is yet another ECW superstar who has serious potential to be a future main eventer in the big two.
NOTABLE OTHERS
It surprises me that with all the talk ongoing about ECW wrestlers jumping ship; the name of Little Guido hasn't come up. He's a great technical and shoot wrestler that just needs a little something extra to get him over with the fans, and if anyone, the WWF can help give him that.
The Sandman...brilliantly over in ECW, but his spell in WCW as Hardcore Hak was far was successful. Sandman's only real options lie with Puerto Rico's IWA, hardcore Japan or XPW.
Tommy Dreamer was only staying in wrestling because of ECW. With his neck needing surgery that will end his in ring career, maybe now we will see Dreamer retire from active professional wrestling.
Johnny Swinger was seen entering the arena at a WWF house show with Edge and Christian last week, so maybe he was there for talks...
Simon Diamond and Dawn Marie will probably stick together and wind up in WCW in the near future. If used properly, they will help each other out and Diamond is definitely a possible future main eventer.
York and Matthews are going to be a top tag team, and hopefully they will be signed up where they can get TV exposure, i.e. WCW. If they are not signed, these two will be the best tag team running the independent circuit.
As for those not mentioned above, expect the majority of other ECW wrestlers to work for independents or sign with the always growing XPW who pay similar money to that of ECW. Maybe in 6-12 months we can re-print this column and see how many of these descriptions and predictions are accurate!
