Big news for XFL, also Bichoff to buy WCW, Goldberg! TNN has just signed a deal to televise XFL games on Sunday afternoons. XFL president Basil V. DeVito Jr. was quoted as saying, "We are excited to welcome TNN as our cable partner. Fans who tune in to TNN on Sunday afternoons will experience a different type of football telecast, one that we believe will change how sports is presented on TV." TNN joins both NBC, which airs Saturday XFL night games, and UPN, which shows Sunday night games, as partners in broadcast of the XFL. In February right after the NFL's Superbowl is when the XFL season begins. In an update on the story I brought to you yesterday, it is now official that the new financial backers for Eric Bischoff's effort to purchase World Championship Wrestling is Columbia Tri-Star, which just so happens to be the company that produces BattleDome. Joining the negotiations with Bischoff to buy WCW are the Tri-Star executives. If this effort to purchase WCW happens to succeed, the plan is to scale back WCW and run Monday Nitro and Thunder events exclusively out of Las Vegas, Nevada until the company is completely read for a relaunch early next year. Goldberg is facing Lex Luger at Starrcade rather than Scott Steiner for the Heavyweight Title is due to the fact that WCW higher ups didn't want to make his streak feel worthless by just letting Goldberg have a Title shot and push it aside. In addition, they are trying to generate a large amount of heat for Luger which hasn't really happened lately. |
