Outlook - Masashi Aoyagi is one of hundreds of legit athletes from a combat sport who were pulled into pro-wrestling almost by chance. While many have come in with a big push, stunk in the ring and left, Aoyagi is an exceptional case. When Atsushi Onita started FMW in 1989, he was looking to battle the UWF brand of pro-wrestling with something different. He brought in seemingly one-dimensional fighters such as Masashi Aoyagi. Onita’s first rival established himself and within a few years was a regular in Shiro Koshinaka's Hesei Ishingun. That helped him establish himself and he continued to work a slew of independents in the late 1990s. In 2000, Aoyagi inexplicably became a regular outsider in Pro-Wrestling NOAH and has been for quite some time. Although he is essential an karate guy with some stiff kicks, Aoyagi is very competent at that approach because he has a certain intensity and air of legitimacy about him. He is in his forties and was never a top guy apart from his run with Atsushi Onita nearly twenty years ago, but he has certain mystique that keeps him around. While much cannot be expected out of him, Masashi Aoyagi continues to chug along and look just fine as he always has.
