Place in History - Gulf Coast Championship Wrestling had its regular top faces and a wide array of heels over the years. Often these heels wore masks, Curtis Smith built a unique legacy in GCCW as having four distinct and successful masked man gimmicks. Curtis broke through the Nashville office in his homestate much to the dismay of his older brother, Rocky, one half of the legendary Infernos tag team. Curtis found his way down to Alabama soon after and paired up with Billy Spears as the masked Blue Yankees. Utilizing the loaded boot gimmick (one of the Infernos' trademarks), the Yankees got over as if there being Northern invaders wasn't enough. Spears' run was brief, but Smith quickly became a top heel as a singles wrestler. The fans berated him with chants of "Go home Yankee" as battled the likes of Cowboy Bob Kelly before being run out of town. He returned a few months later, now in black and called "The Spoiler." The fans recognized him, but that did not stop the success of himself and his frequent tag partners the Wrestling Pro and Spoiler #2 (Mike McManus). After that run, Smith left again before returning as a second incarnation of the legendary Infernos tag team. Replacing Frankie Caine and tagging with his brother and being accompanied by J.C. Dykes, this version had a successful run before Rocky moved on. Dykes remained though and Curtis would tag up with Doug Gilbert to form the Super Infernos in Georgia. After that successful run, Smith and Dykes returned to Alabama, where Curtis was reborn under a new guise as the "Mighty Yankee." Revisiting this persona from the late 50s as well as his own Blue Yankee creation, Smith introduced a new angle by bringing in multiple Mighty Yankees - four in all! Over the next few years, Smith continued to pop up as masked characters in Mobile and Nashville. He was part of the old guard though and when Lee Fields and Nick Gulas closed their offices, he only made the odd appearance. Smith retired to Georgia, working as a firefighter for a while, before retiring. While there were more notable masked men in pro-wrestling, Curtis Smith found away to keep himself fresh by continually changing his persona and revisting old ones when the time was right. He did not invent the masked Yankee character, but he was probably the most successful with it. He did not invent the Infernos gimmick, but he and his brother had a hot run with that. Smith is also not a legend on the level of The Spoiler (Don Jardine), yet he made that work too. Some say that in pro-wrestling innovation is important, but with Curtis Smith timing was everything.
