Place in History - Dick Dunn was a highly regarded worker in the Alabama/Tennessee region throughout the 1960s and 1970s. After cutting his teeth elsewhere, Dunn became the top star in the Dothan section of Gulf Coast Championship Wrestling. He became popular for his explosive style, hence his nickname “Dynamite,” and his humble persona. He formed many notable tag teams, but it was his partnership with Don Carson that propelled to top success in his home state of Tennessee. Wrestling as the Masked Red Inferno, he and Carson feuded with Ken Lucas and Dennis Hall over the World Tag Titles in Nashville. They enjoyed success in Alabama, where Dunn appeared without the hood and helped Carson get over as a heel, until the Dunn was turned on and a feud ensued. A similar scenario evolved with Dunn’s greatest rival, the Wrestling Pro. The two were ideal foes as both were top level workers and well established on their respective ends of the face-heel spectrum. After years of battling in Alabama, the two would partner up in Tennessee as the masked Superstars. Dick Dunn's resume was capped off by a run with Billy Garrett in Florida as the masked Medics (lifting the gimmick from an early legendary team out of Alabama). Although this version, later renamed the Interns, went on to bigger success after Dunn's departure, he was certainly the veteran worker who allowed it to get a shot in Florida and later Okalahoma. Dunn would even donn the mask a few years later when he buddied up with the "new" Medics in Florida. Although he spent his later years in Alabama putting over new top heels, Dunn’s abilities in the ring made him on the best assets that GCCW ever had. Dick Dunn built his legacy as one of Alabama’s premier babyfaces and one of the most reviled masked heels everywhere else. He is one of the greatest pro-wrestlers to ever work the Southeastern territories and needs to be remembered for his many contributions.
