Place in History - El Hijo Del Santo was a phenomenon since his debut in the mid-80s. He has taken the masks and hair of a laundry list of name luchadors. While following in the footsteps of a successful father is not all that rare in lucha libre, his situation was entirely different. Perhaps only Mitsuo Momota (son of Rikidozan) has had the kind of paternal legacy. Simply put both men's fathers were cultural icons in their respective countries and made pro-wrestling a bigger deal then it had ever been. Like Momota, he started his career directly in the shadow of his father's death. While there have been quite a few gifted or successful second generation stars, perhaps none were better than El Hijo Del Santo. Santito was a strong worker right off the bat and he was like a smaller, faster, more athletic version of his father. Amongst the best workers in the world for the bulk of his career, Santo was the wrestler his father never was. He was immediately over because of his namesake and with his abilities, Santo quickly became the top luchador, a spot he perhaps still holds to this day. After years of big money feuds with a variety of rudos, some successfully trips to Japan and Southern California, Santo's best days are certainly behind him. Hoovering around 40, El Hijo Del Santo remains one of the most popular, most successful and most talented wrestlers in the world. He remains proof that no matter who's footsteps one might follow in, they can walk a different path and become their own man with qualities their predecessor never had.
