Place in History - There have been quite a few good tag teams who wore hoods, but the Infernos are considered the best by a great many. Frankie Cain and Rocky Smith were journeyman wrestlers in Tennessee when they hooked up with local referee Jimmy Dykes and created a legendary three-man unit. Cain was the backbone of the team. He had a fertile mind, a great sense of working a match and one of the best gimmicks ever - the loaded boot. Smith was an excellent compliment to Cain, he was a good hand and the Infernos gimmick gave him that something special. Esquire J.C. Dykes was one of the premier managers of the day alongside great Southern heel managers - Saul Weingeroff, Ken Ramey and Sir Clements. The trio were tremendous heels with numerous tricks to help them win including the loaded boot, loaded mask, the ever-present water canteen or a fireball! The Infernos toured the South widely and always found success. Their feuds with Johnny Weaver & George Becker, Eddie Graham & Jose Lothario and the Funk Brothers were major programs in three of the top territories in the late 1960s. They were so hot that even after Cain left, Rocky Smith was able to bring in his younger brother Curtis on board and they enjoyed a few more years of success with the gimmick. Smith retired and died from heart failure a few years later. Dykes retired the same year following a 1976 car accident that killed several Tennesee wrestlers. Frankie Cain, however, went on to great success as the Great Mephisto in the 1970s. The Infernos were a widely influential tag team due to their variety of heel tactics that gave them tag titles in numerous territories in a relatively short span of time.
