Place in History - Rayo de Jalisco’s journey in through pro-wrestling started in a manner very typical of many great luchador stars. He was just a young man who sort of stumbled into the sport and also had some family members involved. His brothers, Tony and Black Sugar, were luchadors on the local circuit and he spent much of the 1950s trying to find his place in the lucha world. Often luchadors toiled on the local level, learning their trade, trying out new personas and waiting for a break in Mexico City. Max Linares’ stock rose when he took on his “El Rayo” guise in the late 1950s in Juarez. Within a few years, he had developed the character that made him a legend, “Rayo de Jalisco.” His career took off from that point. He became the popular partner of Blue Demon in the 1960s and was one of the most popular performers of the decade. While the legends of the 1950s were still around and major attractions, Rayo de Jalisco was in his prime and winning numerous championships. By the 1970s, he was an established legend and like the other legends of the day, he starred in a handful of movies. Rayo de Jalisco's popularity continued into the 1980s, although by this point he was in his 50s and his son, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., was achieving success of the same persona. Rayo de Jalisco and his old partner Blue Demon were involved with the last great story of their careers in 1989. Rayo goaded Demon out of retirement and the two men, whose combined age was over a century and quarter, fought in a mask-versus-mask match. Rayo de Jalisco was unmasked and his son was left with the simple hood's legacy as Rayo retired soon after.
