Place in HistoryThe Rock is one of the biggest stars that pro-wrestling has ever seen. A third-generation wrestler who seemed destined for the sport, Dewey Johnson went from Rocky Johnson's quiet son to an excellent football player to a white-meat babyface in his formative years. Although he had the athleticism and some say the personality that shone through early on, Rocky Maivia was simply the right person at the wrong time. The fans loathed his clean-cut persona and “Die, Rocky, Die!” chants were startling testaments to that hatred. He was reborn as a heel and that was the change that he needed. The Rock was a larger-than-life character with charisma that oozed out of his pores and he caught fire. As the WWF Attitude era kicked off, The Rock was at the front with Stone Cold and DX taking on WCW in the ratings. Numerous memorable angles, high-quality matches and wildly entertaining promos made The Rock a hot ticket, perhaps the hottest ticket, in the WWF. His game tightened up and he received recognition amongst insiders for his talents and his legend grew making him a celebrity. This good-looking, charismatic person transitioned to movies and unlike Jesse Ventura, Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper, he was huge. Although he still makes the odd appearance, Dwayne Johnson has largely left the world of pro-wrestling behind for the world of Hollywood. He has mostly been successful as an action star, but has shown he has great comedic talent. The Rock's run on top was brief, but it was ground-breaking and trend-setting.
