Place in History - In pro-wrestling there are a variety of talkers, some use comedy, some use catchprases, some scream and yell, some are calm and cool and a select few are so good at talking that they can cut what are called “money promos.” Ron Wright was such a man. Although Wright can be remembered for many things - his successful tag team with his “brother” Don, his bloody and lengthy feud with Whitey Caldwell, his run as a manager of some big stars or even his “Tennessee Chain Matches,” Ron Wright is best remembered for his talking. His thick Southern Appalachian drawl, his nonstop “Motormouth” and his endless trademark phrases. The self-professed “Number One Hillbilly” incensed fans to the point that they burned up an airplane he owned, rioted in arenas and accosted him in public. It was all because he was so good at what he did. Like any classic villain, he needed a strong foil and that was Whitey Caldwell, with whom he broke into the business in the late 1950s. Caldwell was a great worker with a quiet demeanor that endeared him to the local fans. Ron Wright could have traveled outside of Tennessee more and probably would have become one of the biggest heels ever, but he largely stayed close to home and maintained a day job as a pressman in his hometown. While he had a simple look, Wright’s athletic background and ability to generate amazing levels of heat could have made him a hit anywhere in the world. He was the “King of Kingsport” though and driving those hillbillies in East Tennessee crazy was his calling. As he slowed down in the ring, Wright began managing and announcing and did that off and on with various levels of success into the 1990s. Territorial wrestling had some local legends, but Ron Wright is in a class that few ever achieved at the local level.
