Place in History - After World War II, there were numerous German heels throughout the pro-wrestling world. Many were not authentic Germans and the Von Steigers were amongst that crowd. In the late 1960s, the Winnipegger known as Al Torres (Pastrick) was turned into German heel Kurt Von Steiger. Pastrick, despite being the son of Polish parents who had survived concentration camps, embraced the opportunities that the gimmick gave him. He took the gimmick to Calgary and paired up with a fellow Winnipegger Lorne Corlett. Following the success of the Von Erichs and the Von Brauners, a pair of midcarders grew facial hair, wore sashes with Iron Crosses and hit the road. They terrorized babyfaces in Vancouver, Portland, Calgary, San Francisco, Charlotte, Nashville, Minneapolis and all the way to Australia. The Von Steigers were great ring generals and knew their gimmick well, which was the key to their success. After a their run, Kurt Von Steiger was able to start running towns in Arizona and train wrestlers like Afa Anao’i, Bobby Jaggers and Bill Anderson. Karl though moved on and spent more time touring and tag wrestling. The Von Steigers stand out as an example of how the right guys when paired together and put with the right gimmick can spell success and it did for two men from Winnipeg. In regards to their German heel gimmick, while the Von Steigers were not the biggest stars or even the best, they the most well-travelled and left a broader impact as a result.
