Striking - Ron Waterman only has a little boxing training, so he's best suited for ground n' pound or clenched striking. As a strong wrestler he can be dangerous in so far as he can get good positioning, but he tends to only pound away half of the time. Standing he will throw punches, but he's very tentative most of the time. He's most effective in close with dirty boxing and knees. Waterman has a poor defense, so he tries to keep things close and under his control.
Wrestling - A very powerful guy with an excellent wrestling background, Ron Waterman's wrestling is inarguably his bread and butter. The combination of natural physical gifts and sound technique make him amongst the better fighters when it comes to taking people down. He is explosive with his takedowns and expands a lot of energy on them, he opened many people's eyes when he muscled down Mirko Crocop and controlled him skillfully on the mat, which no one else has done. Waterman is a controlling fighter who
Hooking - Though he was more of a limited GNP wrestler in his early years, Waterman has shown marked improvement since returning to MMA in late 2002. He has gained some solid submission victories, using armlocks, which seem to play to his stengths. He is strong guy and he can just muscle on a keylock or otherwise against most opponents. His technique is shabby, but if he can develop quicker and more precise application of armlocks, he will be very dangerous. Then again how many wrestlers fall under than description?
Strengthes - Ron Waterman might be nearing forty, he might have been away doing pro-wrestling for a long time and he might have missed crucial years in MMA's development, but he brags an impressive record. He is an excellent wrestler with all the drive and tenacity to become a top heavyweight. Waterman has looked impressive since returning to MMA and has opened up his game a bit and he's looked a bit more than a guy who was crushing tomato cans a few years ago. If he continues to improve and not show his age, Waterman could become another Mark Coleman if he's given the right fights.
Weaknesses - Ron Waterman's age and ability probably will keep him from taking a step up amongst the realm of top MMA heavyweights. His standup is below average and it seems unlikely it'll improve to the extent that it should. His chin is suspect as well, so standing up is even more dangerous. Do to his powerhouse wrestler approach, Waterman is often blown up after spending a lot of energy on takedowns.
Outlook - After the WWF released him from a developmental contract, Ron Waterman was a man at a major crossroads. He had looked good in the UFC when it was in bad shape, but could he step back into MMA and become something? Pancrase gave him a chance and Pride soon followed suit and he even got a few chances with B-level shows in the US. The results were favorable and Waterman looks to be a credible heavyweight. Though he's lacking in some area, expect the "H2O Man" to be a solid heavyweight for a few more years if his body can hang with the wear and tear.
