Outlook - Anthony Carelli has had a peculiar career in pro-wrestling with only a few years behind him. He was a Canadian judoka who hooked up with OVW in the Jim Cornette days. He did not make much noise until he laughed at the Boogeyman when he was supposed to be terrified, Cornette slapped him and was subsequently let go by the WWE. Cornette's replacement, Paul Heyman, took Carelli and remade him as a Russian sambo fighter. He and his teacher Mr. Strongko were pushed hard, protected well and caught the eye of the WWE. Next he debuted in the WWE, while touring Europe as Italian Santino Marella and he upset Umaga to win the Intercontinental title. It was a big mistake. While Marella worked as a midcard killer in OVW as an overpushed European babyface he flopped. Just when the fans began turning on him and he might have been canned, Santino turned heel and as the scumbag boyfriend of the ditzy Maria, he got over. In the ring, Santino borders on terrible. He is amazingly inconsistent because his opposition largely determines the quality of the match. He wants to work like an MMA tough guy, yet he is a goofball. On the microphone in almost any situation, Santino is one of the WWE's most entertaining performers. Does he draw fans? Maybe not, but as an undercard talent he definitely works. The Santino Marella character is great, the wrestler is not so great and does not have much upside. Santino's lifespan in the WWE is going to depend on how fresh his character can remain. While he is one of the funniest pro-wrestlers on the mic, comedy wrestlers tend to burn out.
