A scarce Briggs Patent early Winchester made in 1865 brought $220,000 at the Little John Auction Service at Phoenix Club in Anaheim, Calif. This rifle resembles the M-1866, has a sliding brass foreend that covers a loading port in the magazine tube.
This was an experimental design which was never produced commercially. This gun is serial #1.
It bears an inscription to W.C. Dodge, a former U.S. patent attorney who wrote a pamphlet at the time of the Civil War urging the Army to adopt rapid-fire breechloaders over muzzle loaders. It should be noted that a third edition copy of this pamphlet sold for $3,850.
Total proceeds at the auction was 4 million dollars. from Auction update, Gun Journal September 1998.
