Firearms Engravers Guild of America set art-form standards
Not long ago, the art of firearms engraving in this country was on the verge of becoming a lost art. The grand old masters were diminishing in numbers and there was a lack of information available to anyone having a desire to try to master this art form.
The majority of individuals who did try gun engraving struggled through trial and error to achieve some level of competency. Many new engravers gave up for lack of information and support.
In June 1980, 21 engravers from across America met in Las Vegas, Nev. The meeting was the catalyst for the formation of the Firearms Engravers Guild of America (F.E.G.A.). The group met again in Houston, Texas in Feb. 1981. At that meeting, 35 engravers formally voted the guild into existence. They adopted bylaws and incorporated the F.E.G.A. in the State of Texas.
The objectives of F.E.G.A. are to provide opportunities for engravers to exchange ideas and knowledge, assist in improving individual skills, promote firearms engraving as a legitimate art form, and to raise public interest and appreciation in quality firearms engraving.
F.E.G.A. is a success being known as the recognized source of information on American engravers and engraving. The guild has grown to more than 250 members representing a wide range of engraving talents. The group meets annually.
In 1985, the Guild joined with the American Custom Gunmakers Guild (A.C.G.G.) in a first-ever exhibition. It is now known as "The Greatest Assembly of Custom Gun and Engraving in America." During the gathering, members promote custom guns and engraving via education seminars, an awards program and displays.
The Guild publishes a Professional Directory which lists its members and illustrates their talents in photographs. Membership includes a quarterly subscription to the Engraver and a How To notebook.
