ALERT: Searching for Sterlings' 30.06

My name is Ken Callahan, and I am looking for some information that could possibly lead me to finding the whereabouts of General Bill Sterlings Texas Ranger issue 30.06.

The story behind this is that in the 1930s, General Sterling was wildcatting in Bastrop County, and lived with my grandfather Earl Callahan for a few weeks. When he and his partners were finished, he didn't have any money to pay my grandfather for room and board, so he offered him his horse, which my grandfather had plenty ofhe didn't want to feed another. The only other possession that Sterlings had that was worth anything was his riflemy grandfather took it.

A couple of winters later my grandfather was hunting whitetail around New Braunfels with some friends. He shot a small buck and tore him up real badthere wasn't much meat left. After that, he took the rifle to a gun dealer down on Congress Avenue in Austin and traded it in for a smaller caliber gun that would not "tear up the meat so bad."

This is the story that is told by my father over the years and he has discussed this with the curator of the museum in Waco. They don't have any record of General Sterling ever being in Bastrop County.

Anyway, my father has often told that story and I have heard him say numerous times he sure would like to know the whereabouts of that rifle. If you have information about this gun, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. (Editor: Contact me if you have information rwr4675348@aol.com.)

Thank You,

Ken Callahan
