Hi! Welcome to my homepage.
I am the web administrator for the University of North Texas Libraries Web Infrastructure.
My previous job was with BMC Software Inc as the Knowledge Management Engineer for their Business Intelligence Department. My primary role in this position was to establish a Knowledge Management Infrastructure for the department. I used my skills as an information professional and web developer to plan, design, develop and implement an extensive Knowledge Management network.
The dual nature of this position had me switching between two skill sets. The first skill set draws directly from my educational background of Library and Information Science. The first step in establishing a KM network is to inventory tacit and explicit knowledge and then organize that knowledge according to an established taxonomy; both the knowledge and taxonomy must then be maintained as closely as possible. My skills in cataloging and classification were called on consistently during this stage of the plan.
The second skill set was web development. I began developing websites using HTML as a hobby in 1996 and began to do it for fees soon after that. BMC Software hired me initially because of my web skills. While on the job, they trained me in more sophisticated web programming, specifically Active Server Pages. Along with this, I learned the inner workings of how a web server, IIS, interacts with web browsers. I then began to build small web applications that used a Microsoft Access backend. Finally, before I was let go, I began to build much more robust websites with a SQL Server backend.
The most surprising aspect of this position was the amount of research it curtailed. I had to research knowledge management vendors for the knowledge management infrastructure. I looked at several cataloging and thesaurus construction techniques to help organize the knowledgebase. Finally, for the web development, I researched how to accomplish a specific task using Active Server Pages. I would say overall, I spent about fifty percent of my time researching various subjects.
Finally, I am proud to announce that I have created the Special Librarian Job Board. It is a free job resource for both job seekers and employers.
