The Media and the Debates Rich Bourgeois Recently on Tuesday Nov 4, I saw the "Rock the Vote" Democratic Presidential Debate on CNN. After the debate, two CNN expert analysts said that the candidates had no new message for the young voter audience. Watching the debate, I thought the audience did indeed hear a new and clear message from presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich who said "if you want to rock the vote, you have to rock the boat" and challenge the status quo by: (1) creating a public works job program and living wage jobs for all including new college graduates, (2) getting the US out of Iraq and having the UN take control in the creation of an Iraq for the Iraqi's, (3) cutting the excess military budget by 15 percent and funding pre K education, (4) reversing the Bush tax cuts on the wealthy and investing in free public college tuition and (5) using NASA to lead research in alternative energy programs. Kucinich plans also include providing Healthcare (Medicare for all) that takes the profit out of healthcare and includes prescription drugs with price controls, and the creation of a more peaceful foreign policy that promotes international cooperation and rejects preemptive wars. The CNN post debate analysts ignored the remarks of Kucinich and the young crowd’s reaction to his message. CNN's Paul Zaun did not invite candidates Kucinich, Sharpton, and Braun for a post debate interview. Special invitations were restricted to candidates Clark, Lieberman, Kerry, Edwards and Dean and conversation was focused on Dean's remarks involving the Confederate Flag and his efforts to attract the poor white southern vote. Although Kucinich did discuss the major problems today facing young voters - living wage jobs, true safety thru peace, education, alternative energy, healthcare - it sure does not help to have the media "Miss the boat" in their post debate analysis and show bias in their interview coverage. Voters in a democracy need to be informed by the media so as to vote for candidates who serve the peoples best interests, and not be misled into -Missing the vote - voting for candidates that are favoring Corporate interests and promise little changes to major problem areas. |
