About Me and My Cars checkbar dd1

This is a 1956 Plymouth (Destruction Derby Car) that in 1967
sparked my interest in racing at the former Saugus Speedway.

On this outing the fuel filter bowl broke on the first hit,
which I learned the hard way was glass, but on its second
outting it took third place.

This is a 1950 Buick that in 1968 started the racing blood to flow
in my veins as a partner in this Limited Stock Division car.

It did not work out though, because I never got to drive the
car, which is what I was eagerly waiting to do.

This is a 1962 Ford that in 1971 started my full time racing career
at the former Saugus SpeedWay in Southern California.

It is also the car that on the first night ever of figure "8" racing,
I went the wrong way in and the announcer at the track gave me my
nickname, "Wrong Way Willard", which has stuck to this day.

Below are some pictures of the aftermath from going the wrong way.

This is a 1960 Buick winning a heat race during the 1973 season.
(One of many wins this car had in its three year racing career.)

The scoreboard tells the tale of the event, 8 laps in 3:38 minutes
on a 1/3 mile flat track equals about 78.8 miles per hour average,
which was not bad for a street stock car.

Sometimes it even got closer at the "X" (intersection).

This is the 1973 Season Awards Banquet which I was honored to have
received the award for the Most Improved Figure "8" Driver.

This is my 1965 Buick Riviera Grand Sport, my favorite car,
that in the 1978 Street Stock / Figure Eight Season won seven
of the first ten main events in that year.

Following is the picture of the aftermath that happened on the last
lap of the figure "8" main event trying to win the first of its wins.

This is a 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle which I drove for someone else,
the first car I drove but did not own, in the 1980 Season.

Now that I no longer race I enjoy spending time with my wife (Jodi)
of twenty-eight years, my two grown children (David Jr, twenty-seven,
and Vanessa, twenty-two), my daughter-in-law (Barbie), my daughter's
love-of-her-life (Jim), watching racing on T.V., and fishing at our
local lakes for bass.

My wife likes to go camping with me, especially now that we own
a motorhome, and is a darn good fisherperson. She beat the pants
off me for a long time before I caught bigger fish than she did.

At least one big holiday weekend each year all the family,
my nephews Tony & Rocco, Rocco's girlfriend Crystal,
my sister-in-law, Cheri, and sometimes their friends
all join us at Cachuma Lake for a great time.

I also like to collect NASCAR® items
like Die Cast cars, tee shirts, books
and a half scale Rusty Wallace hood.
