Ryan Giggs has defended his form after being targeted by
disgruntled fans during Manchester United's Worthington Cup
semi-final draw against Blackburn.
The winger's 74th-minute substitution was met with cheers inside
Old Trafford after another disappointing display.
"Probably the main reason I'm getting criticised is that this
season, and maybe last, my performances have been better away
from home," Giggs said.
"I think the thing Roy Keane picked up on is that the real fans
are the ones that follow us away. I never get stick off the fans
who go to games week in, week out.
"Perhaps my biggest critics are the Old Trafford season
ticket-holders because maybe I have not been producing my best
form at home.
"But I am quite happy that I am producing my best form away -
and that is a lot harder to do.
"The fans pay their money and expect something special every
time I touch the ball, but that isn't always possible."
Giggs has made 520 appearances for Manchester United since
making his debut in 1990 but has recently been linked with a
switch to Inter Milan, a move he has rejected.
Nicky Butt, who has not played since damaging his ankle playing
for England against Macedonia in October, hopes to return to
action with Manchester United this month.
Butt told MUTV he would like to play in United's FA Cup
fourth-round match against West Ham United on 25 January.
"I have slowly being upping and upping the training and I will
be doing some football work on Thursday and then full training
on Monday," he said.
"I have to be careful because if it flares up again I could be
out for another two or three months." |
