Where Have All the Heroes Gone?
WEST SIDE'S BUMP FOR THE MONTH
-October 2001
Major League Baseball has finished another great season of
baseball and some amazing things have happened in 2001.
The vaunted homerun record that many people thought would stand for
another 30 years was bested by another.
The all-time runs scored
record that had lasted for 70 some odd years was finally beaten and a
new king was crowned.
A team won more games than any other team except one by tying their
90-year-old record.
A man cam within a whisper of breaking the single-season record for
most strikeouts in a season.
The 25th person to ever collect 3,000 hits did it in the final weekend
of the season.
For the first time ever a pitcher went 20-1 (wins-losses) to begin the
season.
And two of the greatest players of our era called it quits after long
and illustrious careers.
Why did I bring all this up?
Because for the first time in a long time the word hero was absent the
past few weeks in talking about these men's accomplishments. Had all
this occurred in the year 2000, the names of Bonds, Henderson, Gwynn,
Ripken, Clemens & Johnson would have been described as great men, idols
& people to look up to.
Why the change?
Because of what has been happening in the world we have woken up to the
sobering truth of what heroes are all about!
Heroes are not people who can sing great, act in movies or hit a home
run. Heroes are not people who have accomplished great personal feats
and made other people stand in admiration of their talent.
Heroes are
people who go about their lives trying to save others. Heroes are
people who seek ways in which they can enrich another's walk on earth.
Heroes are people who sacrifice time, energy, money & at times their
own lives so other men and women might feel some benefit!
Where have all the heroes gone?
Heroes are not vanished from our sight; it's just that our sights have
had to be placed on other objects!
There's nothing wrong with being an athlete, songwriter or pretty face
it's just not heroic.
As Christians we have known this all along. Perhaps at times it
seemed like we had forgotten it, but deep down inside we always knew
who the real heroes were. Why?
Because we fell in love with the greatest hero of all time who still is
performing his heroic deeds.
Jesus Christ is the true hero of the world.
Through his efforts millions of others will be saved. Through his
efforts untold lives on planet earth will be much better off. Through
his supreme sacrifice you and I receive the greatest benefit of all
time.
Personally I cheered for every one of the record breakers this
year, but reality helped me see it for what it is:
a game where men play against men. May each Christian see again what a
hero is all about and that Jesus is the hero the world is looking
for!--Drew
