INSPIRING HOPE IN OTHERS
"I guess that one of the most important things I've learned is
that nothing is ever completely bad. Even cancer. It has made me a
better person." - Terry Fox, 1980
On September 17 the 20th Terry Fox run was held all across Canada.
It is hard to believe that it has been twenty years since this
courageous young man thrilled all of Canada with his admirable run. I
can remember the excitement he brought to our class as we watched him
go from city to city. I can also remember the disappointment we all
felt (and probably the rest of Canada as well) when he finally stopped
and then died far too young.
Today, his run is called the marathon of Hope!
I believe it is quite fitting. I wonder if when he began on his
journey in 1980 he had any idea of how much of a hero he would become?
I wonder if he realized the hope that he would give to millions of
other cancer patients through his efforts?
His quote both thrills me and gives me the chills.
The former because facing such terrible odds he still climbed high
mountains. The latter because it took a young boy getting cancer and
losing his leg to become such a champion.
As followers of Jesus, we too have a great hero who overcame the
odds to bring hope to the millions. Again, the world may never have
heard of him had he not been struck with such a terrible fate. Yet,
it took him being smitten for the sins of the world for us to have a
great champion.
Peter said "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again
to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
dead." (1 Peter 1:3)
I hope one day that cancer will be completely wiped out. One
thing that fans of Terry Fox can know, he did defeat cancer by not
letting it take away his hope. In the same way, sin and all of its
destructive power has been defeated, because our hope cannot fail.
