When You Have No One To High Five
WEST SIDE'S BUMP FOR THE MONTH
-June 2001
One of the most distressing features of today's society is the
increase of the amount of people who feel alone. It was not that long
ago that it was reported how a woman stayed up every night just to hear
the voice on the television tell her good night.
The recent addition to this type of thing could be considered
funny if it did not also reveal how alone many people feel.
A man from New York city has invented an arm of some sort that is able
to give you a high five whenever you are watching a sporting event and
are alone. Now, a lot of people might think this is a great
advancement in the age of sports viewing but in reality it is another
sign that people are having to adjust to not being able to share
favourite times with others.
Loneliness has to be the loneliest word of the English language.
One of the reasons I believe God chose to call His church the His
family is to remind people that in a lonely world they don't have to be
lonely anymore.
Christians are to remember that they are fellow members of the church
or brothers and sisters in Christ and therefore we need to be involved
in one another's life so no one has to resort to an artificial hand for
a handshake, hug or high-five!
There is another reminder from God though concerning the danger of
being lonely. If we are children of His, we will never be alone!
That's right, and that is why it is so good to be Christians. There
are times where it may appear that we have absolutely nobody in this
world, but that can never be the case for the child of God's!
Jesus said, "Lo, I am with you always even to the end of the age"
(Matthew 28:20)
It truly is sad that so many people in such a busy world are
actually dying of loneliness. May God's family intervene and provide
the camaraderie that these people need. At the same time, may all of
God's children remember to look above and know that we are never left
alone!
High-fivin' an artificial limb might seem like a novelty, but a hand in
the hand of the one, whose essence is love, is necessary.--Drew
